Chapter 3 - The Secret General

The moment the lock on the heavy double doors clicked into place for the night, the silence of the mansion was broken by a sharp, deep intake of breath. Ethan sat up instantly, his movements rigid but infused with a furious, kinetic energy.

"He's going to try to kill me on my birthday," Ethan said, his voice stronger now, the gravelly tone beginning to give way to the commanding authority of a billionaire CEO. He swung his legs over the side of the bed, his muscles trembling slightly from nine months of atrophy, but his eyes were bright with an unyielding fire. "He's already bribed Dr. Reynolds. The 'sudden complication' he mentioned... it's a potassium chloride injection. It triggers a cardiac arrest that looks completely natural on a post-mortem chart."

I stared at him, my hands gripping the edge of the mattress. "If you know that, why don't we go to the police right now? Why don't we show them you're awake?"

"Because Jason owns the local precinct, Claire," Ethan said, looking up at me as he reached for a hidden panel located beneath the solid oak nightstand. He pressed a biometric thumb-scanner concealed in the wood, and a small, sleek digital tablet slid out from a secret compartment. "If I expose myself now, I'm a sitting duck in a hospital bed. I need to systematically dismantle his financial backers first. I need him completely isolated before I strike."

He began typing furiously on the tablet, his fingers moving with practiced speed. The screen illuminated his face, showing a massive web of offshore bank accounts, corporate shell companies, and leaked board memos.

"He’s been embezzling from the primary logistics fund to pay off his gambling debts in Macau," Ethan murmured, his eyes narrowing as the data scrolled across the screen. "Forty-two million dollars. He’s using my absence to falsify the shipping manifests. If the board sees this before the birthday deadline, he won't just lose the trust—he'll go to federal prison for the rest of his life."

"How can I help?" I asked suddenly, the words leaving my mouth before I could even think about the danger.

Ethan stopped typing. He looked up at me, his gray eyes softening for a fraction of a second, evaluating the girl from Yonkers who had just been dragged into his personal war zone. "Why are you helping me, Claire? You could easily go to Jason, tell him I'm awake, and collect a ten-million-dollar bounty right now."

"Because I might be poor, Ethan, but I'm not a monster," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "And because I know what it feels like to be trapped by people who think their wealth gives them the right to own your soul. Your grandmother bought me, and your cousin wants to discard me. I'd rather build an alliance with the ghost in the bed."

A genuine, dark smile broke across Ethan’s face—the first real smile he had shown since waking up. "An alliance it is, wife. Tomorrow morning, Jason is hosting a private yacht party for the primary institutional investors. I need you to go. I need you to wear a hidden wire, and I need you to get him to talk about the shipping manifests."
