Chapter 2 - The Emergency Room Confrontation

The ride to the hospital was a blur of flashing lights, frantic phone calls, and Sarah’s stifled sobs. Daniel drove with reckless precision, his eyes darting between the road and his wife, who was curled in the passenger seat, gripping her stomach.

"He's still kicking, Daniel," Sarah whispered, her knuckles white. "The baby... he's moving, but it feels wrong. It hurts so bad."

"Hold on, honey. We're almost there," Daniel pleaded, his heart hammering against his ribs.

The moment they pulled into the emergency bay of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, Daniel shouted for help. Within seconds, a team of trauma nurses and an obstetrician rushed out with a gurney. Sarah was whisked away into the trauma ward, leaving Daniel standing in the waiting room, his hands covered in his wife’s tears and a light smear of blood from her scraped arms.

He sat on the plastic chair, clutching the phone. He knew Arthur wasn't bluffing about his influence. Arthur Vance was a powerful real estate mogul with deep ties to local government. If Daniel just walked into a local police precinct, the report might mysteriously vanish before the ink could dry. He needed someone outside of Arthur’s pocket.

Daniel called his older brother, Marcus, a hard-nosed federal prosecutor based in the state capital.

"Daniel? What’s going on? It’s late," Marcus said, his voice thick with sleep.

"Marcus... it’s Sarah. Jason pushed her down the stairs. She’s seven months pregnant," Daniel choked out, breaking down for the first time. "Arthur laughed. They did it on purpose, Marcus. They wanted her to lose the baby so they could steal Mom's inheritance. I have it all on a recording."

There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. The sleepiness vanished from Marcus's voice, replaced by cold, calculated fury. "Listen to me very carefully, brother. Do not talk to the local precinct. Arthur funded the current Police Chief's campaign. Send me the audio file immediately. I am pulling in a specialized state task force for domestic violence and financial crimes. Keep Sarah safe."

Before Daniel could hang up, the automatic doors of the ER slid open.

To Daniel’s horror, Jason walked in. He had changed his shirt and combed his hair, wearing a mask of false concern. Behind him were two private security guards hired by the Vance estate.

"Where is she?" Jason demanded loudly, looking at the triage nurse. "I’m her brother. There was a terrible accident at home. She tripped and fell, and her unstable husband kidnapped her from the scene."

Daniel stood up, his posture rigid. "Get out of here, Jason."

Jason spotted Daniel and walked over, a malicious smirk flashing across his face for a split second before transforming back into a look of public grief. "Daniel, thank god you're here. Look, we’re all stressed. Dad sent me to make sure Sarah is okay. We want to pay for the best private room, the best doctors. Let’s just drop this silly misunderstanding about a recording, okay? Give me the phone, and we can handle this as a family."

The private guards stepped forward, subtly flanking Daniel, trying to intimidate him into compliance.

"She is not your family," Daniel said, his voice echoing through the quiet waiting room. "You are a monster who kicked a pregnant woman. Get away from me before I break you in half."

"Is there a problem here?" a calm, authoritative voice interrupted.

Dr. Evans, a senior OBGYN, walked out from the trauma doors, accompanied by two hospital security officers. She looked at Jason, then at the two private guards, her eyes sharp and assessing.

"I am Sarah’s brother," Jason stated smoothly. "I demand to see her medical status."

"Sarah is currently stable, but she is undergoing an emergency ultrasound to check for placental abruption," Dr. Evans said coldly. "And before she went into the scanner, she gave explicit, written instructions that neither Arthur Vance nor Jason Vance are allowed within fifty feet of her. Security, escort these men out of my hospital immediately."

Jason’s face darkened, the charming facade slipping. "You don't know who my father is, lady."

"I don't care who your father is," Dr. Evans replied without blinking. "But I know what a criminal looks like. Leave, or I’ll have the state troopers remove you."
