CHAPTER 6 – THE OTHER CHILD

CHAPTER 6 – THE OTHER CHILD

Ashley Parker had never been inside a courtroom before.

She wasn’t supposed to be part of this story.

At least, that’s what her parents had always told her.

“This has nothing to do with you,” her mother used to say whenever Emily’s name came up in fragments—hospital bills, legal whispers, arguments that stopped when she entered the room.

But now she was sitting in a hard wooden chair outside Courtroom 3B, holding a letter she had received only yesterday.

A subpoena.

Her name was in it.

And for the first time in her life, Ashley understood something unsettling:

She had always been inside this story.

Just carefully kept outside the frame.

The Sister Who Didn’t Know She Was Watching a Lie

Ashley had grown up with a version of Emily that didn’t feel real.

Not because Emily didn’t exist.

But because she only existed as a warning.

A sacrifice.

A justification.

“You don’t understand how hard we had to choose,” her father would say when Ashley asked why there were no photos of her sister at home.

“You were the one we had to protect,” her mother would add quickly.

And that word—protect—had always been used like armor.

Until now.

The Summons

Inside the courtroom hallway, Ashley’s hands trembled slightly as she reread the subpoena.

It asked her to testify about:

  • Family financial decisions

  • Knowledge of Emily Parker’s medical condition

  • Awareness of custody transfer

  • Any discussions regarding college funds or inheritance allocation

College fund.

That phrase hit harder than the rest.

Because she had one.

She always had one.

$180,000.

A number she had never questioned.

A future she assumed was normal.

Until now.

Emily Sees Her First

When Ashley finally entered the courtroom, Emily saw her immediately.

Not because she expected her.

But because she recognized something familiar.

Not appearance.

Distance.

Ashley sat behind her parents.

Not beside them.

Not fully with them.

Just… near them.

Like someone trying to stay connected without being pulled under.

For a moment, Emily’s expression softened.

Then tightened again.

Because she understood something simple:

Ashley didn’t know everything.

Yet.

The Question No One Prepared For

Arthur Bell stood.

“Ms. Parker,” he began, “you are the sibling of the plaintiff in this case, correct?”

Ashley hesitated.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Were you aware of your sister’s diagnosis at the time?”

Ashley shook her head slightly.

“No… not clearly.”

Arthur nodded.

“And were you aware that your college fund was referenced in financial decisions regarding her treatment?”

The room changed instantly.

Ashley frowned.

“My what?”

A silence.

Even Arthur paused for half a beat.

Because that answer wasn’t expected.

The First Fracture Inside the Family Narrative

Her father leaned forward sharply.

“Ashley, you don’t need to—”

But the judge raised a hand.

“Let her answer.”

Ashley looked confused now.

“What are you talking about?” she asked quietly.

Arthur adjusted his tone.

“Did your parents ever tell you that funds allocated for your education were considered during medical decision-making for your sister?”

Ashley blinked.

Then slowly shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

Then she added something that landed heavier than anything before it:

“I was told she died.”

Silence.

The courtroom froze.

Emily’s breath stopped for a second.

Olivia’s expression shifted instantly.

Even Arthur lost composure for a moment.

Because that wasn’t part of the narrative.

At all.

The Lie Revealed in One Sentence

Ashley continued, voice quieter now.

“They said she passed away when I was little.”

A pause.

“I thought that’s why we didn’t talk about her.”

Emily’s hand tightened slightly on the table.

Not anger.

Not shock.

Something more disorienting.

Absence.

Because this wasn’t just abandonment anymore.

It was erasure.

Her father finally spoke, sharply.

“That’s enough.”

But it was too late.

The judge looked up.

“Was the sibling informed of the patient’s survival?”

No one answered immediately.

That silence was the answer.

Olivia Steps In Again

The judge turned.

“Ms. Hart, do you have knowledge of this?”

Olivia stood.

“Yes.”

Arthur objected immediately.

“Your Honor, relevance—”

Overruled.

Olivia’s voice was steady.

“She was told Emily died during treatment.”

A pause.

“Which was not true.”

Ashley turned slowly toward her parents.

Confusion now had weight behind it.

“You told me she died?”

Her mother’s lips parted.

But nothing came out.

Her father didn’t look at her.

The Emotional Collapse Begins

Ashley’s voice dropped.

“So all those times I asked… and you said she was gone…”

Her hands trembled slightly now.

“You lied?”

No one answered.

Not because they couldn’t speak.

Because anything they said would be recorded now.

And permanent.

Emily finally spoke softly.

“Ashley…”

Her sister looked up.

That was the first time they had looked at each other in fifteen years.

Not as memory.

As reality.

The Truth About the Fund

Arthur attempted one final clarification.

“The college fund was not used for medical expenses. It was preserved.”

But Olivia cut in calmly.

“That is not what the hospital records state.”

The judge nodded.

“Proceed.”

Olivia continued.

“The fund was explicitly cited in financial refusal justification.”

Ashley frowned.

“So it wasn’t used?”

A pause.

Emily answered this time.

“No.”

A beat.

“It was used to decide I wasn’t worth spending anything else.”

Ashley’s breath caught slightly.

Because that reframed everything she thought she had been protected from.

The Breaking Point

Ashley stood abruptly.

“I didn’t know any of this.”

Her voice cracked at the end.

“I didn’t know I was part of this.”

Her mother reached out slightly.

“Ashley, sit down—”

But Ashley stepped back.

“No.”

A pause.

Then she looked at Emily again.

“I thought I lost a sister.”

A swallow.

“I didn’t know I was told I didn’t have one.”

Silence filled the room again.

Heavier now.

Finaler.

Emily and Ashley – The First Honest Moment

The judge allowed a short recess.

Ashley remained in the hallway.

Emily followed her out.

No cameras yet.

Just air.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Ashley finally said:

“I didn’t choose any of this.”

Emily nodded.

“I know.”

A pause.

Then Ashley asked quietly:

“Did you hate me?”

That question hit differently than the rest of the trial.

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

A beat.

“I didn’t know you existed the way I should have.”

Silence.

Then Ashley whispered:

“I think I was raised inside a lie.”

Emily didn’t correct her.

Because she wasn’t wrong.

Final Scene of the Chapter

Back inside the courtroom, the atmosphere had changed permanently.

The case was no longer just about Emily.

Or Olivia.

Or even the parents.

It was about something larger.

A system of decisions built on silence, omission, and control.

Ashley returned to the stand.

But she was no longer just a witness.

She was evidence of something no one could undo:

May you like

The story had always had another child in it.

Just one no one told the truth to.
