Chapter 2: The War for Truth

Chapter 2: The War for Truth
Within three hours of her eviction, Veronica Vale had launched her counterattack.
By noon, the internet was ablaze. A prominent tabloid published an exclusive, explosive headline: "Billionaire Tech Visionary Ethan Mercer Dumps Elite Fiancée on the Street for Lowly Maid."
The article was masterfully twisted. It painted Veronica as a heartbroken victim who had caught her billionaire fiancé in an inappropriate affair with the household staff. It included paparazzi photos of Veronica crying as security guards escorted her into a taxi, followed by older, blurred images of Rosa carrying groceries into the Mercer Tower.
On Facebook, the article went viral within minutes. Comments poured in by the thousands, criticizing Ethan for his alleged infidelity and attacking Rosa with vile, classist remarks.
Inside the Mercer Systems boardroom, Ethan’s executive PR team was in a state of absolute panic.
"Mr. Mercer, the stock price has dropped by two percent since the article dropped," the head of public relations, a stressed woman named Clara, said as she projected the social media metrics onto the wall screen. "The public is eating this up. The Vales are an old-money New York family. They have deep connections in traditional media. They are framing this as a moral scandal. We need to issue a statement denying the affair immediately."
Ethan sat at the head of the long glass table, his laptop open, his fingers flying across the keyboard. He didn't look panicked. In fact, he looked incredibly focused.
"No statements," Ethan said calmly.
Clara blinked. "Sir? If we stay silent, the public will assume the rumors are true. The board is terrified of a consumer boycott on our new medical AI platform."
Ethan stopped typing and looked up. "Let them talk. Let the Vales dig their own grave. Clara, do you know what the biggest flaw in old-money families is?"
"Sir?"
"They think the media belongs to whoever pays the editors. They don't realize that in 2026, data belongs to whoever controls the infrastructure."
Ethan turned his laptop around. On the screen was a fully compiled digital dossier.
"For the past three hours, my personal AI system has been scanning every security camera feed inside my penthouse from the last two years," Ethan explained. "I didn't just find the incident with the handbag. I found dozens of instances where Veronica verbally abused Lily when I wasn't home. Slapping her toys out of her hands, forcing her to sit on the floor in the dark pantry, threatening to throw her mother into prison if she complained."
The boardroom went completely silent. The executives looked at the screen, horrified by the timestamps and the crystal-clear audio files of Veronica's cruel, mocking voice.
"Furthermore," Ethan continued, his voice dropping into a chilling register. "I ran a deep forensic audit on Vale Logistics—Veronica's father's company. To maintain their luxurious lifestyle, they’ve been falsifying shipping manifests and embezzling millions from their corporate clients. They thought their connection to me would protect them from federal scrutiny."
Ethan closed his laptop with a sharp snap.
"They wanted a public war," Ethan said, standing up. "I'm going to give them an extinction event. Clara, coordinate with our legal department. We aren't releasing a PR statement. We are releasing a federal indictment."
A Safe Haven in the Storm
While the financial district burned with corporate warfare, the atmosphere inside the east wing of the Mercer penthouse was vastly different.
Rosa stood in the center of the grand guest suite. It was larger than her entire childhood home. The bed was covered in Egyptian cotton, the windows looked out over Central Park, and there was a private playroom attached, already filled with brand-new toys, books, and art supplies that Ethan had ordered to be delivered within an hour.
Lily was currently sitting on a plush, cloud-shaped rug, coloring furiously with a box of sixty-four crayons. For the first time in a week, she hadn't asked to wash her hands.
A soft knock on the door broke Rosa's trance. Ethan stepped into the room, having stripped off his formal suit jacket and tie. He looked younger, more approachable in his rolled-up white sleeves.
"Is the room to your liking?" Ethan asked.
"Mr. Mercer, this is... it's too much," Rosa said, her voice catching. "We are deeply grateful, but I am still your employee. I should be downstairs, working—"
"Rosa," Ethan interrupted gently, walking over to stand beside her. "Your contract as a maid is terminated."
Rosa froze, her breath catching in her throat.
"But," Ethan continued quickly, seeing the flash of panic in her eyes. "I am hiring you as the Executive Director of the Mercer Foundation’s new child welfare initiative. You spent four years volunteering at women’s shelters before you came here. You have a degree in social work that you couldn't finish because of financial hardship. I read your file, Rosa. You are overqualified to clean my floors, and you are exactly the kind of person I need to run my philanthropy division."
Rosa stared at him, completely speechless. Her jaw trembled. "You... you looked into my background?"
"I did," Ethan said, looking down at Lily, who was now proudly holding up a drawing of a multi-colored rabbit. "I wanted to understand how a woman with so much strength and intellect ended up hiding in my service quarters. You protected your daughter through the worst parts of this city. Now, it's my turn to protect both of you."
Before Rosa could respond, Ethan’s phone buzzed. It was an urgent text from his security detail at the front desk downstairs.

Sir, Richard Vale and Veronica Vale are in the lobby. They have a news crew with them. They are demanding to come up.
Ethan looked at the screen, a cold smile touching his lips. "The prey has walked straight into the trap," he murmured. He looked at Rosa. "Would you like to come downstairs with me, Director Alvarez? It’s time to show the world who really owns this tower."
