Chapter 4 - The Legal War

The eviction was just the opening salvo. If my family thought I would be satisfied with simply taking back the house, they severely underestimated what happens when a grieving mother finds her purpose.
Two weeks later, the story took an even darker turn for them.
Sitting in the high-tech conference room of the Carter Logistics headquarters downtown, I looked across a long glass table. On my side sat Colonel Hayes and a team of top-tier military JAG lawyers. On the other side sat Beatrice, Emily, and Brad, accompanied by a public defender because no private law firm would touch them after the Department of Justice filed formal charges.
"We have reviewed the full financial forensics," Senior JAG Attorney Major Vance announced, sliding a thick stack of indictments across the table. "Mr. Brad Vance, your law school tuition was paid via a military educational dependency grant intended strictly for immediate blood relatives of active-duty service members. You and Emily committed fraud by falsifying marriage timeline documents to expedite the payout before Michael’s deployment."
Brad’s face was pale, dark circles bruising the skin under his eyes. He looked like he hadn't slept in weeks. "It was an administrative oversight..."
"It’s grand larceny against the United States government," Major Vance countered sharply. "Furthermore, Beatrice Vance, we have traced the four hundred thousand dollars you took from Nora’s medical trust. You didn't lose it in retail trading. You used it to pay off Brad’s private gambling debts to an offshore casino group."
I looked at Emily. The sister who had looked down on me, who had treated my grief like an embarrassing inconvenience, was now shaking uncontrollably.
"Nora," Emily whispered, tears leaking down her face. "Please. Brad could lose his license. I could be disbarred before I even start practicing. If we go to prison, our lives are over."
"My life was over, Emily," I said, my voice steady, filled with the quiet authority of a woman who had walked through hell and come out forged in steel. "When Michael died, I didn't just lose a husband. I lost my partner, my safety, my future. And instead of holding my hand, you looked at my belly and saw a financial burden. You looked at my grief and saw an opportunity to take the master bedroom."
"We'll pay it back!" Beatrice pleaded, reaching across the table, but a guard subtly shifted forward, causing her to draw her hands back. "We'll work, we'll sell everything, Nora. Please, don't let them lock your mother up."
"The law isn't mine to command, Mother," I replied softly. "I am the Civilian Director of Logistics. My job is to protect the assets of our soldiers. You stole from a soldier who died protecting this country. The state is making an example of you."
Brad suddenly snapped, pointing a furious finger at Emily. "This was her idea! She told me Nora was weak! She said Nora would never fight back because she was too depressed! She’s the one who wanted the garage cleared out!"
"You coward!" Emily screamed, throwing her notepad at her husband. "You were the one who couldn't pay your debts! You begged my mother for that money!"

As the two of them began screaming at each other in front of the federal attorneys, the absolute ugliness of their true natures was laid bare. They didn't love each other; they were just parasites who had run out of a host.
I stood up, adjusting my maternity blazer, refusing to watch the pathetic display any longer. "Major Vance, proceed with the full prosecution. No deals. No leniency."
