Chapter 7 - The Dawn of the Varric Kingdom

Six months later.
The Atlantic Ocean was no longer gray and violent; it was a deep, brilliant blue, its calm waves washing gently against the golden sands below a private estate in Boca Raton, Florida. The iron gates were still there, and the armed men still walked the perimeter of the palm trees, but the house itself no longer looked like a fortress. The stone columns were covered in blooming jasmine, and the air smelled of salt water and sweet orange blossoms.
The penthouse in Manhattan was gone—sold to a corporate developer after the Valetti family had been completely dismantled, their leaders turned over to federal prosecutors after a mountain of financial evidence was anonymously delivered to the FBI the morning after the storm. Matteo had cleansed his world, not with blood this time, but with a clinical, legal precision that ensured his son would never have to live in hiding.
Down on the private beach, the afternoon sun was warm and sweet.
Liana sat on a large linen blanket spread out across the sand, her hair down, wearing a soft cream-colored dress that fluttered in the sea breeze. In front of her, Baby Nico—now nearly a year old, chubby-cheeked, and bursting with life—was attempting to crawl toward a small plastic bucket filled with seashells. He let out a loud, joyous shriek as his hands found the toy, his dark gray eyes turning back to Liana for approval.
"Good job, my little lion," Liana laughed, her face entirely free of the shadows that had once haunted her.
The heavy glass doors of the beach house opened, and Matteo Varric walked down the wooden steps onto the sand. He had discarded his tactical gear, his weapons, and his dark suits; he wore a simple white linen shirt and trousers, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his tattoos, but his face was completely relaxed, his eyes soft as he looked at the blanket.
He sank onto the linen beside Liana, his large frame settling naturally into the space beside her. He reached down, picking up Nico with an ease that showed he had practiced every night, tossing the baby into the air until the beach filled with the sound of infant laughter.
"The lawyers finalized the papers this morning," Matteo said softly, looking over at Liana as he set Nico down between them.
Liana’s breath caught. "The papers?"
Matteo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box and a legal document bearing the gold seal of the Florida Family Court. He slid the document toward her. It was a permanent, non-revocable adoption decree, naming Liana Graves as the legal, official mother of Nico Varric.
"You saved his life, Liana," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a deep, emotional register that made her heart skip a beat. "But over the last six months, I realized you did something much harder. You saved mine. You taught a broken man how to breathe again."
He opened the velvet box, revealing a simple, breathtaking emerald ring that caught the afternoon sun like a star. He didn't look at her with the authority of a mafia boss; he looked at her with the vulnerability of a man offering his soul to the only person who could handle it.
"I don't want you to be a servant in a golden cage anymore," Matteo whispered, his hand reaching out to wrap around hers, his thumb tracing her knuckles. "I want you to be my wife. I want us to build a family that has nothing to do with the past, and everything to do with the light you brought into my house."
Liana looked from the brilliant emerald to the beautiful, laughing boy who was currently trying to chew on the edge of the legal document. She thought about her old life in Queens, the endless nights of scrubbing floors, and the cold, hollow survival she had left behind. Here, she was needed. Here, her heart had a purpose.
"Yes, Matteo," Liana said, her eyes filling with tears of pure, unadulterated happiness as she leaned forward, her lips finding his in a deep, sweet kiss that washed away the final remnants of the smoke and the storm.

Matteo pulled her close, his arm wrapping around her waist, while Nico scrambled up between them, his chubby hands clutching both of their shirts as if sealing the bond himself. The sun sank slowly over the horizon, painting the sky in pale shades of gold and rose—a beautiful, quiet dawn for a kingdom that had finally traded its blood money for love.
