Chapter 4 – The Secret Rebecca Left Behind

Chapter 4 – The Secret Rebecca Left Behind

The first rays of morning sunlight filtered through the windows of St. Gabriel Medical Center, but no one in Noah's room felt the comfort of a new day.

Daniel hadn't slept.

He sat beside his son's bed with his jacket draped over the chair, staring at the drawing Noah had made months earlier.

"She cuts things open."

Those four childish words refused to leave his mind.

Every memory from the past two years now seemed different.

Not because the facts had changed.

Because his perspective had.

He had dismissed bruises.

He had explained away fear.

He had mistaken silence for healing.

And perhaps the greatest mistake of all...

He had trusted the wrong person.

Across the hall, Officer Miguel Alvarez entered the temporary command room the hospital had provided for investigators.

A technician looked up from a computer.

"We've received the records from the exotic insect suppliers."

"Anything?"

The technician nodded.

"One purchase matches."

Alvarez leaned closer.

"A black giant centipede was legally purchased six weeks ago."

"Name?"

The technician hesitated.

"It wasn't purchased under Marissa Vale's name."

"Then whose?"

He turned the monitor.

The buyer's name read:

Ethan Brooks.

"Who is Ethan Brooks?" Alvarez asked.

"We're still checking."

At the same time, Evelyn sat quietly beside Noah.

The little boy had finally awakened.

His arm had been placed in a temporary brace while doctors waited to apply a new cast.

"How do you feel?" she asked.

"My arm still hurts."

"I know."

He looked toward the door.

"Is she gone?"

"For now."

Noah seemed relieved.

After a long silence, he whispered,

"My mom used to say secrets can keep people alive."

Evelyn tilted her head.

"What kind of secrets?"

Noah frowned as if trying to remember.

"She hid something."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"She told me..."

He closed his eyes.

"...if anything ever happened to her, I should tell Dad about the blue bird."

Evelyn blinked.

"The blue bird?"

He nodded.

"But I forgot."

His face fell.

"I forgot until now."

Daniel entered the room just in time to hear those words.

"The blue bird?"

Noah looked at him.

"It was in Mom's office."

Daniel's mind raced.

Rebecca had maintained a private study in the family estate.

After her death, the room had been locked.

He hadn't entered it in years.

Marissa had suggested leaving it untouched "out of respect."

He had agreed.

Now...

That decision suddenly felt dangerous.

Two hours later, Daniel drove home for the first time since Noah's accident.

The mansion felt strangely empty.

Police officers were already waiting with a search authorization related to Noah's assault investigation.

Marissa had not returned home.

Daniel climbed the grand staircase toward Rebecca's old office.

Dust covered the hallway.

He unlocked the door himself.

The scent of old books greeted him.

Everything remained exactly as Rebecca had left it.

Family photographs.

Shelves filled with journals.

A wooden desk facing the garden.

Daniel felt emotion tightening his throat.

He hadn't realized how much of her he had locked away along with the room.

He slowly searched every shelf.

Nothing.

Every drawer.

Nothing.

Then he remembered Noah's words.

"The blue bird."

His eyes swept across the room.

There.

A small ceramic bluebird sat on the windowsill.

Rebecca loved collecting handmade birds.

Daniel picked it up.

It felt heavier than expected.

He turned it over.

A tiny brass screw sealed the bottom.

Using a letter opener, he carefully loosened it.

Something slid into his hand.

A silver key.

And a folded note.

His hands trembled as he unfolded the yellowed paper.

Rebecca's familiar handwriting filled the page.

"Daniel, if you're reading this, then something has gone terribly wrong."

His heart pounded.

"I pray I'm simply being overcautious. But if I'm not here, you must not ignore what I'm about to tell you."

Daniel sat down.

"There is someone trying to enter our lives through our business. A woman connected to one of our charitable foundations has been asking unusual questions about our finances, our family, and especially Noah."

His breathing slowed.

"Her name is Marissa."

Daniel froze.

The letter slipped from his fingers.

No.

It couldn't be.

Rebecca had written this nearly four years earlier.

Long before her death.

Long before Daniel had even met Marissa socially.

He forced himself to continue reading.

"I don't know her intentions yet, and I may be completely mistaken. But if anything ever happens to me unexpectedly, promise me you will investigate before trusting anyone."

The final line shattered him.

"Protect Noah. He notices things adults refuse to see."

Daniel covered his face.

Tears came without warning.

Rebecca had tried to warn him.

Years ago.

He simply never received the warning.

Officer Alvarez arrived thirty minutes later.

Daniel handed him the letter.

The detective read every line carefully.

"This changes the investigation."

"You think so?"

"I know so."

He carefully placed the letter into an evidence sleeve.

"If Rebecca suspected Marissa before her death, we need to reopen the boating accident."

Daniel stared at him.

"You think Rebecca was murdered?"

"I'm saying we can no longer assume it was an accident."

Meanwhile, Marissa sat inside a quiet downtown café.

Across from her sat a man wearing sunglasses despite the cloudy morning.

Ethan Brooks.

He slid a newspaper across the table.

The headline read:

BILLIONAIRE'S SON SURVIVES MYSTERIOUS HOSPITAL INCIDENT

Marissa's jaw tightened.

"This wasn't supposed to happen."

Ethan lowered his voice.

"The insect should never have been discovered."

"There was a nurse."

"I know."

"What now?"

He leaned forward.

"We leave."

Marissa shook her head.

"Not yet."

"I'm too close."

"Daniel still trusts me."

"Does he?"

She didn't answer.

Because deep inside...

She already knew the answer.

Trust had begun to crumble.

Back at the mansion, investigators continued searching Rebecca's office.

One detective noticed something unusual.

"There are scratches on the floor."

Daniel looked over.

Beneath the large Persian rug were faint drag marks leading toward the fireplace.

The rug was rolled aside.

The officers examined the stone hearth.

One brick sounded hollow.

Using a small pry tool, they removed it.

Inside the cavity rested a locked metal box.

Daniel inserted the silver key Rebecca had hidden inside the bluebird.

The lock clicked open.

Inside were several neatly labeled folders.

Financial records.

Insurance documents.

Photographs.

And one small flash drive.

Officer Alvarez carefully lifted it.

"Let's see what Rebecca wanted you to find."

The drive was plugged into a laptop.

Only one folder appeared.

Its title read:

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME

Daniel felt the room grow colder.

He clicked it.

The first file was a scanned notebook.

The second contained copies of emails.

The third...

Was a video.

Rebecca appeared on the screen.

Alive.

Calm.

Looking directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

She said softly.

"...then I was right to be afraid."

Daniel's breath caught in his throat.

The room became completely silent.

No one dared interrupt.

Rebecca continued,

"I have discovered evidence that someone has been trying to gain control of Vale Development through marriage."

She paused.

"I don't yet know everyone involved."

"But I know one name."

The screen flickered.

Rebecca looked straight into the camera and spoke it clearly.

"Marissa."

At that exact moment, Daniel's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

A frightened voice whispered only four words before the call disconnected.

"They know about Rebecca."

The line went dead.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Officer Alvarez looked at him.

"Who was it?"

Daniel slowly lowered the device.

"I don't know."

Outside the mansion, unnoticed by everyone inside, a black sedan rolled silently away from across the street.

May you like

Someone had been watching the house.

And now they knew Rebecca's hidden evidence had finally been found.
