Chapter 5 - The True Heritage

The revelation of my adoption set me on a new path.

With the help of Professor Hughes, who had become a mentor and a surrogate mother figure to me, I was able to access the closed adoption records from twenty-two years ago. It took several weeks of legal paperwork, but eventually, a thick manila envelope arrived at my apartment.

I sat at my kitchen table, my hands trembling slightly as I opened the seal.

Inside was my original birth certificate. My name wasn't Emily Bennett. I was born Clara Vance.

My biological mother, Sarah Vance, had died from complications during childbirth. She had been a young, single artist with no family to help her, which was why I had been placed in the state adoption system. But as I read further down the documents, a name in the emergency contact file caught my eye: Arthur Vance.

My jaw dropped.

Arthur Vance was a well-known philanthropist and the reclusive owner of Vance Capital, a massive investment firm based in San Francisco. He was also Sarah’s estranged older brother. According to the notes in the file, Arthur had spent years searching for his sister after she ran away from home, but by the time he found her, she had already passed away, and her baby had been adopted by the Bennett family under a sealed record.

He had been looking for me for twenty-two years.

Without wasting a single second, I dialed the number listed for Vance Capital’s executive offices.

Two days later, I found myself standing in the lobby of a sleek, glass-and-steel skyscraper in downtown San Francisco. The receptionist guided me to the top floor, where the doors opened into a sprawling penthouse office overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge.

Sitting behind a massive walnut desk was an elderly gentleman with sharp, kind blue eyes and silver hair. He looked up as I entered, and the moment his eyes landed on my face, he froze.

He slowly stood up from his chair, his hands trembling as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, faded photograph. He looked at the photograph, then back at me.

"Sarah..." he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

"No," I said softly, stepping into the room. "My name is Emily. But my birth certificate says I am Clara Vance. Your niece."

Arthur Vance closed the distance between us in three long strides. He reached out, his hands hovering over my face as if he were afraid I was a ghost.

"I looked for you everywhere," he choked out, tears streaming down his face. "When Sarah died, the system told me the adoption records were sealed, and because of the Bennett family's influence and wealth, they blocked every legal petition I filed. I didn't know where you were... I didn't know if you were safe."

"I wasn't safe, Uncle Arthur," I said, my own tears falling freely. "But I survived. And I found my way back to you."

He pulled me into a tight, fierce embrace. For the first time in twenty-two years, I felt the warmth of a real family. A family that didn't want to use me, or abuse me, or silence me.

A family that simply loved me for who I was.
