Chapter 7 - The Garden After the Rain

Six months later.

The Atlantic Ocean was no longer gray and violent; it was a deep, brilliant blue, its calm waves washing gently against the golden sands below the cliffs of Long Island. The iron gates of the Rossi estate were still there, and the armed men still walked the perimeter, but the mansion itself no longer looked like a prison. The stone angels had been cleared of their hidden cameras, replaced by beautiful hanging baskets of blooming jasmine and lavender.

The third-floor nursery was empty. The medical monitors and the heart screens had been donated to St. Gabriel’s Medical Center three months prior.

Down in the rose garden, the afternoon sun was warm and sweet.

Hunter sat on a large wool blanket spread out across the grass, her hair down, wearing a soft cream-colored dress that fluttered in the breeze. In front of her, little Leo Rossi—now eight months old, chubby-cheeked, and bursting with life—was attempting to crawl toward a plush velvet ball. He let out a loud, joyous shriek as his hands found the toy, his dark gray eyes turning back to Hunter for approval.

"Good job, my little lion," Hunter laughed, her face entirely free of the shadows that had once haunted her.

The heavy glass doors of the conservatory opened, and Lorenzo Rossi walked down the stone pathway. He had discarded his tactical gear, his weapons, and his dark suits; he wore a simple blue linen shirt and trousers, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his tattoos, but his face was completely relaxed, his eyes soft as he looked at the blanket.

The Moretti family was gone—their empire dismantled, their leaders turned over to federal prosecutors after a mountain of financial evidence was anonymously delivered to the FBI the morning after the storm. Lorenzo had cleansed his world, not with blood this time, but with a clinical, legal precision that ensured his son would never have to live in hiding.

Lorenzo sank onto the blanket beside Hunter, his large frame settling naturally into the space beside her. He reached down, picking up Leo with an ease that showed he had practiced every night, tossing the baby into the air until the garden filled with the sound of infant laughter.

"The lawyers finalized the papers this morning," Lorenzo said softly, looking over at Hunter as he set Leo down between them.

Hunter’s breath caught. "The papers?"

Lorenzo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box and a legal document bearing the seal of the New York Family Court. He slid the document toward her. It was a permanent, non-revocable adoption decree, naming Hunter Higgins as the legal, official mother of Leo Rossi.

"You saved his life, Hunter," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a deep, emotional register that made her heart skip a beat. "But over the last six months, I realized you did something much harder. You saved mine. You taught a broken man how to breathe again."

He opened the velvet box, revealing a simple, breathtaking diamond ring that caught the afternoon sun like a star. He didn't look at her with the authority of a mafia boss; he looked at her with the vulnerability of a man offering his soul to the only person who could handle it.

"I don't want you to be a prisoner in a golden cage anymore," Lorenzo whispered, his hand reaching out to wrap around hers, his thumb tracing her knuckles. "I want you to be my wife. I want us to build a family that has nothing to do with the past, and everything to do with the light you brought into this house."

Hunter looked from the brilliant diamond to the beautiful, laughing boy who was currently trying to chew on the edge of the legal document. She thought about her daughter, Lily, up in heaven, and she knew—with an absolute, spiritual certainty—that her girl was smiling down on this garden. Her grief had been a dark road, but it had led her to the exact place she was meant to be.

"Yes, Lorenzo," Hunter said, her eyes filling with tears of pure, unadulterated happiness as she leaned forward, her lips finding his in a deep, sweet kiss that washed away the final remnants of the smoke and the storm.

Lorenzo pulled her close, his arm wrapping around her waist, while Leo scrambled up between them, his chubby hands clutching both of their shirts as if sealing the bond himself. The sun sank slowly over the Atlantic, painting the sky in pale shades of gold and rose, a beautiful, quiet dawn for a kingdom that had finally traded its blood money for love.
