Chapter 3 - The Counter-Attack

Adrenaline is a strange chemical. It burns away fear and replaces it with a cold, blinding instinct to survive. Looking at the crowbar raised through the slats, I knew that if he broke that door, we were dead. I didn't wait for him to swing.

I grabbed a heavy, glass jar of preserved pickled stones from the top shelf of the pantry—a massive three-pound jar I had never found a use for until tonight. With every ounce of strength in my body, I unlocked the latch, threw the door open with a violent shove, and hurled the glass jar directly at the man’s face.

The jar shattered against his forehead with a sickening crunch. He roared in agony as the heavy glass and thick brine blinded him, sending him stumbling backward onto the slick hardwood floor. The crowbar clattered away, rolling under the kitchen table.

"Run, Sophie! To the study!" I screamed, grabbing her arm and pulling her out of the pantry.

We sprinted past the groaning man, who was clutching his bleeding face, swearing violently in the dark. We dashed down the narrow corridor toward Ryan’s private study at the back of the house. It was the only room in the house with a solid oak door and a heavy commercial deadbolt—a room Ryan kept strictly locked to keep me out of his financial secrets. But tonight, in his haste to leave for his "trip," he had left the keys dangling in the lock.

We burst into the room, and I slammed the door shut, twisting the heavy deadbolt until it clicked securely into place. Just a second later, the man threw his body against the outside of the door. The solid wood shuddered, but the lock held.

"I'm going to kill you, you bitch!" he screamed, kicking the base of the door. "You think this room will save you? This house is a coffin! You’re just delaying the inevitable!"

Inside the study, the air was cold. I checked the windows here—they too were reinforced with the polycarbonate shields. But my focus shifted to Ryan's desk. If he was desperate enough to kill us for money, the evidence of his ruin had to be here.

I smashed the decorative desk lamp against the side of the mahogany drawers, using the broken metal base to pry open the locked filing cabinet. The wood splintered, and the drawer popped open, revealing stacks of red notices, foreclosure warnings, and an offshore banking statement under a shell company name: Apex Holdings.

But the most horrifying discovery was a handwritten notebook in Ryan's unmistakable cursive script. It detailed the layout of our house, the exact locations of the signal jammers, and a timeline.
