Chapter 2 - The Silent Vow

Fifteen years passed, but the memories of that night never truly faded.
Today, at twenty-three, I stood in the mirror of my own apartment, adjusting the collar of my crisp white blouse. I had grown into a woman who refused to be helpless. Thanks to my Uncle Arthur, who had taken my mother and me under his protective wing, I had received the best education money could buy, culminating in a degree in corporate forensic accounting.
My mother, Victoria, had recovered her dignity, though her health remained fragile. She lived in a beautiful, heavily secured estate in Carmel, funded by Arthur. But as for my father, Charles Sterling? After being exiled, he had crawled into the shadows, plotting, scheming, and waiting for his chance to strike back at the Vance family.
And that chance had finally arrived.
Two weeks ago, Uncle Arthur had suffered a sudden, debilitating stroke. He was currently in a medically induced coma at a private clinic. Almost immediately, the vultures began to circle Vance Global.
I had been hired as a junior auditor at the firm, keeping my identity as Arthur's niece completely secret to avoid drawing the attention of the hostile board members. But yesterday, during a routine audit of the firm's offshore holding accounts, I had stumbled upon a terrifying anomaly.
Someone was systematically draining Vance Global's reserve funds—nearly $150 million had already vanished into a shell company called Apex Horizon.
"Chloe, are you ready?"
My colleague and closest friend, Liam Vance—Arthur's adopted son and the executive VP of operations—walked into my office, his face pale and drawn with exhaustion. Liam had been working twenty-hour days trying to keep the company stable in Arthur's absence.
"Liam, look at this," I whispered, pulling up the encrypted transaction ledgers on my dual monitors. "The authorization codes used to transfer the $150 million... they didn't come from a hacker. They came from inside the executive suite."
Liam leaned over my shoulder, his brow furrowing as he scanned the complex web of routing numbers. "That's impossible. Only three people have those master decryption keys. Myself, Uncle Arthur, and..."
He stopped, his breath catching in his throat.
"And who, Liam?" I urged, a cold dread beginning to settle in my stomach.
"The chief financial officer," Liam said quietly. "Julian Ward. But Julian has been with the family for twenty years. He's Arthur's most trusted advisor."
"Then we need to look deeper," I said, my fingers flying across the keyboard. "I tracked the IP address of the final authorization. It wasn't sent from the office. It was sent from a private residence in the hills of San Francisco."
I clicked on the registry details of the IP address. When the owner's name populated on the screen, my heart stopped. The blood rushed out of my face, leaving me lightheaded.
Registered Owner: Charles Sterling.
My father.
He was back. And he wasn't just trying to steal from the Vance family; he was trying to utterly destroy the empire that Uncle Arthur had built, exploiting Arthur's illness to pull off the ultimate heist.
"Chloe? What is it? Do you know this man?" Liam asked, noticing my sudden panic.

I gripped the edge of my desk, my knuckles turning white. I looked at Liam, seeing the same trust and determination in his eyes that I had felt all those years ago when I stood between my mother and that cane.
"He's my father, Liam," I whispered. "And he's come to finish what he started fifteen years ago."
