Chapter 3 - The Morning of Retribution

At 8:30 AM the next morning, I was sitting in the high-backed leather chair of my private office on the 40th floor of the Sterling Capital Tower. The room was a stark contrast to the baroque excess of the Monroe estate; it was functional, modern, and built of reinforced glass and steel.

The double doors to my office burst open without a knock.

Celeste strode in, her usual flawless composure replaced by an erratic, volatile panic. She wore a sharp cream business suit, but her hair was slightly undone, and her hands were shaking as she slammed a printed bank notification onto my mahogany desk.

"Adrian! What is the meaning of this?!" she screamed, her voice losing all its aristocratic polish. "The private banking portal is showing a zero balance on the security trust! The transfer was canceled! My father just received an automated alert from the compliance department stating that our financial disclosures are under external review!"

I didn't stand up. I didn't look up from the coffee I was slowly stirring. "Good morning, Celeste. Did you sleep well? I hear the weather near the fountain was rather chilly last night."

"Are you insane?!" she hissed, leaning over the desk, her manicured nails digging into the polished wood. "My father’s company is facing a technical margin call in fifteen minutes! If that ten million dollars isn't in our depository account, the bank will freeze our logistics assets! Fix this right now, Adrian! Call your bank and tell them it was a clerical error!"

"It wasn't a clerical error, Celeste," I said, setting my spoon down with a soft, deliberate click. I picked up my remote and pressed a button, activating the massive television wall behind me.

The screen flickered to life, showing a live news broadcast from CNBC. The banner at the bottom of the screen read: BREAKING NEWS: MONROE HOLDINGS FACES UNEXPECTED LIQUIDITY CRISIS. SHORELINE PORT WORKERS INITIATE EMERGENCY STRIKE.

Celeste’s eyes widened as she stared at the television screen. The color drained from her face so fast she looked like a marble statue. "What... what did you do?"

"I didn't do anything, Celeste," I replied, leaning back in my chair and crossing my legs. "Your family built a business on lies, inflated numbers, and stolen pensions. I simply pulled back the blanket. You told my mother last night that her cheap clothes were ruining your aesthetic. Today, your aesthetic is costing you exactly three hundred million dollars in market capitalization."

"You... you gutter rat," she whispered, her voice trembling with a terrifying mix of rage and realization. "My father will ruin you. He has the entire board of the regulatory commission in his pocket!"

Right on cue, the double doors opened again, and two federal agents dressed in dark suits with gold badges pinned to their lapels stepped into the office, followed closely by Marcus Vance.

"Celeste Monroe?" the lead agent inquired. "We are with the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Fraud Division. We have a warrant for the immediate seizure of all electronic devices and financial records associated with you and the executive board of Monroe Holdings. Your father, Arthur Monroe, was taken into custody ten minutes ago at his residence."

Celeste backed away from the agents, her eyes darting to me in a desperate, frantic plea. "Adrian... please... we’re engaged! We love each other! You can't let them do this to me!"

"The engagement ended the second my mother touched the water, Celeste," I said coldly, turning my chair toward the glass window. "Take her away."
