Chapter 6 - The Seven-Year Echo

Nathan sat on the hardwood floor of the closet for what felt like an eternity, surrounded by the unmailed letters of his past. He read through them systematically, each page a painful chronicle of what his ambition had cost him.

He read about Sophie’s first word ("More"), Clara’s first broken wrist from climbing the backyard cherry tree, and Nora’s habit of sitting by the window whenever it rained, asking if the sky was crying because it was lonely.

By the time he closed the box, his eyes were red, but his resolve had transformed into something diamond-hard.

He stood up, found the blue pajamas, and walked down the stairs. The triplets were waiting by the front door, their small backpacks stuffed to the brim with socks, toys, and notebooks. They looked up at him, noting his altered expression. Sophie opened her mouth to ask if he was okay, but Nathan simply knelt down and pulled them into another long, fierce hug.

"Let's go take care of your mom," he whispered into their hair.

The Final Boardroom CallWhen they returned to Providence Medical Center, the girls immediately ran to Lydia's side, presenting her with the soft pajamas and the lotion. Lydia’s face lit up with a beautiful, pure smile that made Nathan’s chest ache with love.

Nathan stepped out into the quiet sunroom at the end of the corridor. He pulled his phone from his pocket, switched it back on, and let the hundreds of frantic notifications stream across his screen without reading them.

He dialed a single number. The Westfield Systems main conference line.

Within two seconds, the call connected. Marcus’s voice filled the room, surrounded by the ambient murmur of twenty worried board members and legal reps.

"Nathan? Is that you? Where the hell have you been? The European conglomerate is walking away in thirty minutes if we don't present the signed authorization!"

"Let them walk, Marcus," Nathan said, his voice flat, steady, and carrying an absolute finality that silenced the entire boardroom on the other end of the line.

"Nathan, what are you talking about?" Marcus stammered. "This is your life's work!"

"No, Marcus. It was my distraction," Nathan replied, looking out the window at the rain clearing over the Portland hills, allowing a sliver of late afternoon gold to break through the clouds.

"Effective immediately, I am resigning as Chief Executive Officer of Westfield Systems. I am appointing you as interim chair. My legal team will forward the restructuring documents by morning. I am selling forty percent of my non-voting shares back to the corporate treasury to fund a permanent community health trust here in Oregon."

"Nathaniel... you're giving up the throne," Marcus whispered, his voice filled with genuine shock. "For what?"

Nathan looked back down the corridor toward Room 318. Through the glass, he could see Clara showing Lydia a new drawing, while Nora sat on the edge of the mattress, reading a story aloud. Sophie was organizing the medical charts on the bedside table, ensuring everything was in its proper place.

"I'm not giving up a throne, Marcus," Nathan said, a peaceful smile finally clearing the lines of tension from his face. "I'm finally coming home to the only meeting that ever actually mattered."

He hung up the phone and walked back toward Room 318, leaving the billionaire behind forever.
