Chapter 4 - The Truth in the Dark

The safehouse in Brooklyn Heights was a brownstone that looked ordinary from the outside but felt like a fortress within. Steel-reinforced doors, bulletproof glass, and three armed guards in the hallway.
Aleandro sat on the leather sofa, Lily fast asleep in his lap, her face pressed against his chest. He hadn't let go of her since the park. Sarah stood by the fireplace, the manila envelope lying on the coffee table between them.
"You knew about her," Sarah said, her voice steady but hollow. "The photos. You've been tracking us for three years."
Aleandro looked down at Lily’s sleeping face, his thumb gently smoothing her curls. "I didn't track you to hurt you, Sarah. The day you left that note... I wanted to tear this city apart to find you. Then Vincent told me you were pregnant. I realized what I was. I realized that if my enemies knew I loved a woman and a child, they would use you to break me."
He looked up, his eyes filled with a fierce, burning pain. "So I made a deal with Vincent. We built a wall around you. My men watched your apartment every night. Every time a suspicious car parked on your block, it disappeared by morning. The laundromat where you work? I bought the building through a shell company so the landlord would never raise your rent. The market where you buy strawberries? I subsidized the prices so you could afford them. I couldn't be your husband, Sarah. But I was never going to let my daughter starve."
Sarah’s hands flew to her mouth. The heart-shaped strawberries. The low rent. The safe streets. It hadn't been luck. It had been him.
"But Vincent came to me," Sarah said, pointing to the file. "He says you're dying, Al. He says you need a transplant, and you're refusing it."
Aleandro’s face hardened. "Vincent shouldn't have involved you. The surgery is dangerous. It requires a direct blood relative. I will not put Lily through a medical procedure for my sake. I've spent three years keeping her blood clean of my sins. I won't use her as a medicine cabinet."
"It's a bone marrow donation, Al! It won't hurt her long-term, and it will save your life!" Sarah cried out, forgetting for a moment that Lily was sleeping.
"And what happens when I live?" Al stood up, carefully laying Lily onto the sofa cushions and stepping toward Sarah. His shadow fell over her, but it didn't feel threatening anymore; it felt like a shield. "If I live, the war continues. The Colombo family wants my head. If they see me walk into a hospital with you and Lily, they will realize she is my match. They will kill her to get to me."
"Then leave," Sarah whispered, reaching out to touch his arm. The wool of his coat was cold, but the muscle underneath was warm and tense. "Leave the family. Give it to Vincent. Walk away."
Al let out a bitter laugh. "You don't face-time out of the mafia, Sarah. The only way out of this life is in a wooden box."

"Then we fight," a voice said from the doorway.
Vincent Russo stepped into the room, his arm in a sling, his face bruised from the shootout at the pier. "Because the Colombo family just crossed the line. They didn't just attack the pier last night, Boss. They targeted the hospital where your records are kept. They know you're sick. We don't have a choice anymore. It's time to end this."
