Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Silver Crown

The double doors of the boardroom burst open for the second time that night. This time, it wasn't a servant or an invalid who entered. It was a squad of six plainclothes detectives from the Federal Financial Crimes Unit, led by a sharp-eyed woman named Captain Reynolds.
"Martin Sterling? Daniel Vance?" Captain Reynolds announced, her badge flashing in the fluorescent light. "We have a federal warrant for your immediate arrest on charges of corporate espionage, grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder."
"Murder?!" Martin shrieked, his voice cracking completely as two detectives stepped behind him, pulling his arms behind his tuxedo jacket. "I didn't try to kill anyone! It was an accident! The car crash was an accident!"
"The mechanic who cut the brake lines of Mr. Sterling’s vehicle on the mountain pass was arrested two hours ago in a motel near the border, Mr. Sterling," Captain Reynolds replied coldly, the heavy steel handcuffs clicking around Martin’s wrists. "He was holding a duffel bag containing fifty thousand dollars in unmarked cash, with a text message confirmation sent from a burner phone registered to your private real estate firm. I suggest you save your breath for the interrogation room."
Daniel didn't even fight. He slumped into his chair, his head resting against the obsidian table, weeping silently as the officers pulled him to his feet and led him away.
Vanessa stood frozen in the center of the room as the detectives turned their attention toward her. Her face was a mask of sheer, unadulterated horror as her mother began screaming at the officers from the corridor.
"Arthur, please, you can't do this to me!" Vanessa cried, her voice cracking as a female detective stepped toward her, a pair of zip-ties in her hand. "Think about our family! Think about what people will say!"
"People will say that the Sterling family finally cleaned its house, Vanessa," I said, turning my back to her as the officers marched her out of the room. Her screams echoed down the elevator shaft until the heavy glass doors finally slid shut, sealing the room in a sudden, heavy peace.
The remaining board members sat in absolute silence, none of them daring to make a sound. Marcus Vance stood up slowly, looking at me with a profound, quiet respect. He raised his hand.
"I move that the board officially ratify Arthur Sterling’s full executive authority as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Global, effective immediately," Marcus stated, his voice ringing true. "And that we launch a full internal investigation to cleanse every remaining trace of Martin’s corruption from our books."
"Seconded," three other board members shouted simultaneously, their hands flying into the air with frantic eagerness.
"The motion carries," I said, walking over to the head of the table—the chair my father had left to me. I didn't sit down. Instead, I turned toward Clara, who was standing quietly by the door, her hands folded neatly over her white apron, a soft, beautiful smile of pure relief lighting up her face.
"Clara," I said, my voice softening in a way the board members had never heard before. "Come here, please."
She walked forward, her small shoes clicking softly against the marble, entirely unfazed by the multi-billion-dollar power structure surrounding her.
"Tonight, this company was saved not by an algorithm, or a legal team, or a board of directors," I announced, looking at every executive in the room. "It was saved by a woman who had the courage to seek the truth when everyone else was busy celebrating a funeral. As of tomorrow morning, Clara is appointed as the primary director of corporate compliance and internal security for the Sterling family office."
The board members blinked in shock, but they didn't dare utter a single word of protest. They simply clapped, a polite, rhythmic sound that filled the room.

Clara looked up at me, her eyes shining with unshed tears of pure happiness. "Thank you, Mr. Sterling. But... I don't know anything about corporate compliance."
"You know how to treat a human being with dignity, Clara," I said, reaching down to take her hand, my fingers locking tightly with hers in front of everyone. "And in this house, that is the highest qualification there is."
