CHAPTER 4 – THE SECRET THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 4 – THE SECRET THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Three hours later.

Cross Manor overlooked Boston Harbor like a fortress carved from stone.

I had never imagined a house could be this large.

Or this quiet.

Every employee spoke softly.

Every hallway smelled faintly of cedar and fresh coffee.

No one looked at me with pity.

No one whispered the word maid.

Instead, they greeted me with respectful smiles.

It felt wrong.

Like I had accidentally wandered into someone else's life.

A doctor finished examining me.

"The baby is healthy."

I released the breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

"No internal bleeding."

"Just stress."

She smiled kindly.

"You've been lucky."

Damon, standing near the window, finally relaxed.

"Thank you."

After the doctor left, silence settled over the room.

I folded my hands.

"You knew."

He nodded.

"For how long?"

"Nine weeks."

I stared at him.

"How?"

Instead of answering, he crossed the room and handed me a sealed envelope.

Inside was a laboratory report.

DNA Test.

Probability of paternity:

99.9998%.

I looked up in shock.

"You tested me?"

"I tested myself."

"I never touched your medical records."

"I obtained DNA from the wineglass you left at the bar."

My mouth fell open.

"You what?"

"I needed certainty."

"You could have asked me!"

"I intended to."

His voice grew quieter.

"But by the time I found where you worked..."

"You'd disappeared."

I looked away.

"I wasn't hiding."

"I was surviving."

That sentence hung heavily between us.

"I couldn't risk losing my job."

"I couldn't tell a man I barely knew that I was carrying his child."

"I thought..."

My voice broke.

"...I thought you wouldn't believe me."

Damon walked closer.

"I would have."

"I didn't know that."

"No."

His eyes filled with regret.

"You didn't."

He reached into his pocket.

"I've been carrying this for weeks."

He placed a small velvet box on the table.

I frowned.

"What is it?"

"Open it."

Inside wasn't a ring.

It was my mother's bracelet.

Perfectly restored.

Every crack repaired.

Every tiny wildflower engraving polished until it gleamed.

I couldn't breathe.

"How..."

"My jeweler spent sixty-three hours repairing it."

Tears blurred my vision.

"You found all the pieces?"

"Every one."

My fingers trembled as I fastened it around my wrist.

It fit exactly as it always had.

I burst into tears.

Not because of the bracelet.

Because someone had cared enough to save something everyone else thought was worthless.

Damon stood awkwardly, almost uncertain.

"I'm not good at comforting people."

I laughed through my tears.

"I noticed."

A faint smile touched his face.

It transformed him.

For just a moment, Boston's most feared man disappeared.

In his place stood the lonely stranger from that snowy night.

Then Lucas knocked sharply on the study door.

"Mr. Cross."

"What is it?"

Lucas's expression was grim.

"Our cybersecurity team found something."

He placed a tablet on the desk.

Security footage began to play.

Not from the cemetery.

Not from the Caldwell mansion.

From the grocery store where I worked six weeks earlier.

The camera showed me finishing my shift.

Then it showed two men following me into the parking lot.

One opened the trunk of his car.

Inside...

Were medical files with my name on them.

And a photograph of my ultrasound.

I stared at the screen in horror.

"They were watching me."

Lucas nodded.

"For weeks."

Damon's face turned to stone.

"It gets worse."

He switched to another recording.

This one showed Caleb Caldwell.

Speaking with a private investigator.

The audio was clear.

"If the baby belongs to Cross..."

Caleb said,

"...she never makes it to the delivery room."

The room fell into absolute silence.

My hand instinctively covered my stomach.

Damon slowly closed the tablet.

When he looked back at me, there was no hesitation left in his eyes.

"They're no longer trying to destroy my reputation."

He walked to the fireplace and picked up his phone.

"They're trying to murder my child."

He dialed one number.

The person on the other end answered immediately.

Damon spoke only eight words.

"Activate Black Shield. Starting now. No exceptions."

Even Lucas inhaled sharply.

Because Black Shield had only been activated once before...

...on the night a mafia war nearly burned Boston to the ground.

And this time, Damon Cross wasn't protecting an empire.

He was protecting a family.
