Chapter 5 - The War for the Narrative

By Thursday morning, the city was in a state of absolute media frenzy. The news of Eleanor Whitfield's arrest had broken across every major network, but the narrative was being aggressively manipulated. Eleanor’s private public relations team—funded by a secret emergency credit line she had managed to open through a shell company in Delaware before I locked her out—was spinning a web of calculated lies.

I sat in the hospital room, holding Amelia's cold, limp hand. The rhythmic thump-thump-thump of the fetal heart monitor was the only sound keeping me grounded. Across the room, the television screen was muted, but the headlines were clear: WHITFIELD MATRIARCH ACCUSED OF ASSAULT BY 'GOLD-DIGGING' DAUGHTER-IN-LAW; DEFENSE CLAIMS ACCIDENTAL FALL DURING DOMESTIC DISPUTE.

"They’re trying to turn the public against her, Christopher," Julian said, entering the room quietly with his laptop. "Your mother’s PR firm is leaking fabricated medical records to the tabloids, claiming Amelia has a history of psychological instability and that she staged the fall to extort a massive divorce settlement from you."

I looked down at Amelia. Her beautiful face was peaceful in the medically induced sleep, completely unaware that her reputation was being systematically dismantled by the woman who had tried to kill her child.

"They think they can control the press because they’re dealing with an ordinary girl," I said, a cold, dangerous smile spreading across my face. "They still don't realize that the Mayor’s office hasn't officially released Amelia’s true identity yet. Thomas Vance is waiting for the perfect moment to drop the hammer."

Right on cue, the television screen flickered, shifting from the tabloid pundit to a live press conference podium outside City Hall. The mayor stepped up to the microphones, flanked by the state attorney and the chief of police. The media sea fell completely silent.

"My fellow citizens," Thomas Vance began, his voice carrying an unyielding, thunderous authority that reverberated through the hospital speaker as I unmuted the monitor. "For the past forty-eight hours, you have heard a great deal of speculation regarding a domestic incident at the Whitfield estate. You have heard the defense of a wealthy matriarch who claims she is the victim of financial extortion by an ordinary girl from a small town."

The mayor leaned forward, his eyes locking directly into the main camera lens. "That ordinary girl is my daughter, Amelia Vance-Whitfield. She chose to live her life without the privilege of her family name because she believed in the quiet integrity of love. She used her own private inheritance to save thousands of jobs at Whitfield Enterprises during the recent economic downturn. And two nights ago, she was brutally assaulted and pushed down a flight of stone stairs by Eleanor Whitfield because she dared to expose internal corporate corruption."

The press pool erupted into absolute chaos. Shouted questions filled the air like a flock of startled birds, but the mayor didn't answer a single one. He turned and walked away from the podium, leaving the state attorney to read the formal indictment charges: Felony aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, attempted manslaughter, perjury, and destruction of criminal evidence.

In a single second, the public narrative didn't just shift; it was utterly obliterated. The high-society world that had spent months giggling at my mother’s cruel jokes about Amelia was suddenly paralyzed with horror. Eleanor Whitfield hadn't just attacked a daughter-in-law; she had declared war on the most powerful political dynasty in the state.
