Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

The rain returned by nightfall, throwing heavy sheets of water against the windows of the service wing. Hannah lay awake in her small bedroom, her mind spinning with everything Daniel had told her.

She held a small, silver locket in her hand—the last gift Aaron had given her before he died. Inside was a tiny picture of the two of them on a beach in Rhode Island, laughing against the wind.

“I’m going to find out what happened to you, Aaron,” she whispered into the dark room, a tear slipping down her cheek. “I promise.”

Suddenly, the light beneath her bedroom door vanished. The faint hum of the hallway generator died, plunging the entire service wing into pitch-black darkness.

Hannah’s instincts, honed by months of looking over her shoulder, screamed at her to move. She sat up quickly, ignoring the dull ache in her stomach, and slid out of bed. She grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from her nightstand, her knuckles turning white.

Outside her door, a muffled scuffle broke out. There was the sound of a heavy blow, a groan, and then the unmistakable thud of a body hitting the carpet.

Someone had taken out the guard.

Hannah didn't scream. She knew that if she made a sound, whoever was outside would burst through the door instantly. Instead, she slipped into the small closet at the back of her room, pulling the slatted wooden doors shut just as her bedroom door was kicked open with a violent splintering sound.

Through the gaps in the closet door, she saw the silhouette of a man entering the room. He carried a flashlight, its beam cutting through the darkness, scanning the empty bed.

“She’s not here,” a voice whispered harshly into a walkie-talkie. It was Julian Rossi.

“Find her,” a frantic voice crackled back through the radio—a voice Hannah recognized instantly. It was Claire Whitlock. “She has Caleb’s ledger! My cousin Thomas found out her brother hid the backup encryption keys in her silver locket! If Daniel gets his hands on that locket, we are all dead, Julian! Kill her and get the locket!”

Hannah gasped silently, her hand flying to her mouth. The locket. The silver piece around her neck wasn't just a memento; it was the key to everything Caleb had found.

Julian turned the flashlight toward the closet. The beam of light sliced through the slats, illuminating Hannah’s terrified green eyes for a fraction of a second.

“Found you,” Julian sneered, stepping toward the closet and tearing the wooden doors open.

He lunged for her, his large hands reaching for her throat. Hannah screamed, swinging the heavy brass candlestick with all the strength she had left. The metal connected with the side of Julian’s head with a sickening crack.

He stumbled back, cursing loudly as blood poured from his temple, but he didn't fall. He lunged again, wrapping his fingers around the silver locket at her neck, snapping the chain violently from her skin.

“Got it,” he hissed, raising his gun toward her chest. “Goodbye, Mrs. Brooks.”

BOOM.

The bedroom window shattered inward as a flashbang grenade detonated, filling the room with blinding white light and smoke. Before Julian could pull his trigger, the bedroom door was torn completely off its hinges.

Daniel Carver charged through the smoke like a demon unleashed from hell. He tackled Julian to the floor, the sheer force of his impact shattering the lawyer’s ribs. Daniel wrenched the gun from Julian’s hand, tossing it across the room, before pinning him to the floor with a knee to his chest.

Daniel’s face was twisted in a savage, murderous fury. He slammed his fist into Julian’s jaw once, twice, until the lawyer was completely semi-conscious and spitting blood.

“You brought a gun into my house,” Daniel roared, his voice shaking the very walls of the room. “You targeted a pregnant woman under my protection!”

Silas and three tactical guards flooded the room, securing Julian in heavy zip-ties. Daniel stood up, his chest heaving, and immediately turned to Hannah, who was shaking violently in the corner of the closet.

He knelt in front of her, his large hands carefully checking her for injuries. “Hannah. Hannah, look at me. Are you hurt? Did he touch you?”

“The… the locket,” she sobbed, pointing to Julian’s clenched fist. “He took the locket. My brother’s files are inside it.”

May you like

Daniel reached down, pried the silver locket from Julian’s bloody fingers, and placed it back into Hannah’s palm. He wrapped his hands around hers, his warmth finally stopping her shaking.

“It’s over, Hannah,” Daniel whispered, his grey eyes burning with an intense, unbreakable promise. “I’ve got you. The mole is caught. And tomorrow, we bring down the entire Whitlock family.”
