Part 3: The Price of a Sovereign Child

The restaurant was transformed into an interrogation room. The elite guests had been escorted to a cordoned-off VIP lounge under strict non-disclosure warnings. Only William, Victoria, the weeping nanny, Madison, and I remained in the center of the room.
Crushed under William’s terrifying aura, the nanny broke down and confessed. She had been paid handsomely by Victoria to monitor Madison and ensure she never interacted with anyone from her past. The truth that poured from her mouth was a sickening nightmare.
"Speak!" William roared, slamming his fist onto a mahogany table. The sudden noise made Madison flinch, and I instinctively covered her ears, pulling her tighter into my lap.
Seeing the walls closing in, Victoria Sterling let out a bitter, cynical laugh. She smoothed down her haute couture coat, looking at me with pure venom.
"William, I did what I had to do for you! For the Sterling legacy!" Victoria hissed. "Do you want to know the truth about your precious, late wife Elena? She was barren! She lied to you about her fertility to secure her place in this family and inheritance. She faked her entire pregnancy!"
William froze, his stoic facade completely shattering. "What are you talking about? Elena faked her pregnancy?"
"Yes!" Victoria shouted. "By the eighth month, she knew she couldn't hide it anymore. She used her family's fortune to bribe the corrupt chief of medicine at the Indianapolis clinic to find a replacement child. They chose her—Emily Vance. A penniless orphan with no family, no power, and no one to fight for her. Elena intended to buy your baby the moment she was born, Emily."
Hearing her words, a visceral agony ripped through my chest. For nine months, I had nurtured my baby, singing to her, dreaming of her, only for a group of wealthy monsters to map out her theft like a business transaction.
"But then," Victoria continued, her voice trembling as she looked at William, "Elena unexpectedly suffered a massive brain aneurysm and died two days before your biological child was due. When I found out about her scheme, I was furious. But the clinic had already set the wheel in motion. On May 14th, this woman gave birth. The doctor told her the baby died, handed her a box of random ashes, and I took the child. I brought Madison to you, William, and told you Elena had given birth just before she died. I did it so you would have an heir! So the Sterling name wouldn't die out!"
"You stole my daughter..." I whispered, my voice cracking as a wave of pure, unadulterated rage washed over me. I looked at Victoria, wishing my eyes could burn her to ash. "You let me live in a living hell for three years, thinking my baby was dead!"
William turned to his mother, his expression terrifyingly calm—the kind of calm that precedes a catastrophic storm. "You forged birth certificates. You falsified medical records. You kidnapped a child and made me an unwitting accomplice in destroying a mother's life."

"I did it for you, William!" Victoria pleaded, reaching for his arm, but he violently brushed her off.
"Vince," William said, his voice echoing in the hollow restaurant as he turned to his head of security. "Call the federal authorities. Hand over my mother and the nanny. And trace that doctor in Indianapolis. I want them all in chains by midnight."
