Chapter 4: The Sister Nobody Knew Existed

Chapter 4: The Sister Nobody Knew Existed
For several minutes, I couldn't speak.
I just stared at the photograph.
Two babies.
Two tiny faces.
Two lives that began together.
And somehow...
Only one of us grew up knowing the truth.
My fingers trembled as I touched the image.
"That's impossible."
The words sounded weak.
Like I was trying to convince myself more than anyone else.
Elena didn't look away.
"I know what it sounds like."
"No."
I shook my head.
"No, you don't understand."
My voice rose.
"My whole life has been a lie."
The people in the café started looking over.
I lowered my voice.
"My mother wasn't my mother."
My eyes filled.
"My father stole me."
I looked at the photograph.
"And now you're telling me I had a sister?"
Elena's face broke.
"Yes."
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because my brain couldn't process anything else.
"A twin."
I looked at her.
"How could nobody know?"
She took a deep breath.
"Because your father made sure nobody asked questions."
I pushed the photo back.
"Tell me everything."
She nodded.
And for the first time, I saw something in her eyes.
Fear.
Not of me.
Of the memory.
"When you were born, there were complications."
My hand moved toward my stomach.
"You and your sister were premature."
I listened.
"The doctors said you both needed special care."
She swallowed.
"I was exhausted. Terrified. I trusted your father because he promised he would protect you."
A bitter smile appeared.
"That was my mistake."
"What happened?"
"One night, he came to me."
Her voice became quieter.
"He told me one of the babies didn't survive."
My heart sank.
"Your sister?"
She nodded.
"He showed me paperwork."
"Death certificate?"
"Yes."
I looked down.
"But you didn't believe him."
"No."
Her eyes filled.
"Because a mother knows."
The sentence stayed with me.
A mother knows.
Something inside me cracked.
Because maybe she did.
Maybe she always had.
"And then?"
Elena looked at the window.
"He disappeared with you."
I frowned.
"Wait."
I pointed at the photograph.
"If he took me..."
"Yes."
"Then where was my sister?"
Elena's silence was terrifying.
"I don't know."
A cold feeling spread through me.
"But you spent twenty-six years searching."
"I did."
"Did you find anything?"
Her fingers tightened.
"Only recently."
My heartbeat increased.
"What?"
She reached into her bag again.
This time she pulled out a folder.
Inside were newspaper articles.
Old records.
Photographs.
I scanned them.
At first, they seemed unrelated.
A different city.
Different names.
Different families.
Then I saw something.
A name.
My breath stopped.
"Clara?"
Elena looked at me.
"Yes."
I stared.
"No."
The room spun.
"That's my sister."
Elena nodded slowly.
"Your sister?"
I looked up.
"What are you saying?"
She placed another document in front of me.
A hospital record.
A birth date.
The same day as mine.
The same hospital.
The same mother.
The same father.
But the child's name was different.
My hands started shaking.
"No..."
I whispered.
"No, that's not possible."
Elena's eyes filled.
"Nora."
I looked at her.
"Your sister has been beside you all along."
My heart stopped.
Clara.
My Clara.
The girl I grew up with.
The girl I fought with.
The girl I protected.
The girl I hated and loved.
She was my twin.
The café became silent.
The world became silent.
Every memory changed.
Every childhood photo.
Every birthday.
Every moment.
I remembered something.
A moment from when we were little.
I was five.
Clara and I were sitting on the floor.
Our parents were fighting upstairs.
She had grabbed my hand.
And whispered:
"Don't worry. I'm here."
At the time, I thought it was just a sister comforting me.
Now...
Maybe she felt something.
Something neither of us understood.
"Why didn't she know?"
My voice cracked.
Elena looked devastated.
"Because he separated you."
I looked at her.
"He raised us together."
"Not completely."
She shook her head.
"He controlled information. He made sure nobody questioned anything."
My mind raced.
Then suddenly, something clicked.
The way my father treated Clara.
Different.
Always.
He criticized me.
Controlled me.
Expected perfection from me.
But Clara...
He protected her.
Spoiled her.
Gave her everything.
I whispered:
"Why?"
Elena looked at me.
"Because he knew."
A pause.
"He knew you were not the daughter he could control."
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
My entire life, I had wondered why Clara got love that I didn't.
Why she was the golden child.
Why I was always the disappointment.
But maybe it wasn't because she was better.
Maybe it was because he was afraid of me.
Because I was the daughter connected to the woman who could expose him.
The daughter who carried the truth.
A daughter he stole.
A daughter he never truly owned.
My phone suddenly rang.
I looked down.
Clara.
My chest tightened.
I answered.
"Hello?"
Nothing.
Just breathing.
"Clara?"
Her voice finally came.
"Nora..."
Something was wrong.
"What happened?"
A pause.
Then:
"I heard everything."
I froze.
"What?"
"I followed you."
My heart dropped.
"Clara, where are you?"
She didn't answer.
Instead, she whispered:
"Is it true?"
I looked at Elena.
Then closed my eyes.
"Yes."
Silence.
Then a broken sound.
A sob.
A sound I had never heard from my sister.
"What am I?"
The question destroyed me.
Because I knew exactly what she meant.
For years, I had asked the same thing.
Who am I?
Where do I belong?
Why was I never enough?
Now she was asking the same questions.
"Clara..."
She interrupted.
"Did Dad know?"
I didn't answer immediately.
That was enough.
She understood.
"He knew."
Her voice turned cold.
"He knew all along."
I heard something crash.
"Clara?"
Her breathing became uneven.
"Everything I believed about my life..."
She whispered.
"It's fake."
"No."
I stood up quickly.
"Listen to me."
The chair scraped the floor.
"You are still you."
A bitter laugh came through the phone.
"Am I?"
I swallowed.
"Yes."
"No, Nora."
Her voice broke.
"I'm not the daughter he loved."
My heart hurt.
Because she finally understood.
The same pain I had carried.
The pain of realizing our father's love came with conditions.
"I was just the daughter he could show."
Silence.
Then:
"And you were the daughter he had to hide."
Tears filled my eyes.
Because for the first time...
My sister understood.
Not because I explained.
Because she lived it.
"Where are you?"
I asked.
"I went home."
My blood ran cold.
"Clara, don't."
"Why?"
Her voice was shaking.
"Because I need answers."
I looked at Elena.
She looked terrified.
"Clara, wait for me."
"No."
A pause.
"I spent my whole life believing I was special."
Her voice cracked.
"But now I know..."
She whispered:
"I was just part of his lie."
The call ended.
I grabbed my coat.
Elena stood immediately.
"I'm coming with you."
"No."
She looked surprised.
"I need to do this."
I looked at her.
"For twenty-six years, you fought to find me."
My voice softened.
"Now I need to find my sister."
She nodded.
And for the first time...
She smiled.
Not a happy smile.
A proud one.
Because maybe she was seeing the daughter she had lost.
Not the child she remembered.
The woman I became.
When we arrived at the Bennett estate, the gates were open.
Too open.
That scared me.
The house was supposed to be filled with security.
Control.
Order.
Instead...
It was silent.
We rushed inside.
"Clara!"
No answer.
Then we heard something.
From my father's study.
A voice.
Her voice.
"You knew."
I ran.
The door was half open.
Inside, Clara stood in front of my father's desk.
Holding old files.
And sitting behind the desk...
Was my father.
Robert Bennett.
The man who had destroyed our lives.
He looked different.
Older.
Broken.
But his eyes were the same.
Cold.
Calculating.
When he saw me, he smiled.
A terrible smile.
"So."
He looked at Elena.
"The past finally caught up."
My fists clenched.
"You lied to us."
He looked at Clara.
Then me.
"No."
He leaned back.
"I protected this family."
I stepped forward.
"You stole us."
His expression hardened.
"Careful."
A pause.
"You have no idea what I've done to keep you safe."
I laughed.
"Safe?"
I pointed at my stomach.
"You attacked me."
His face changed.
For the first time...
A flicker of regret appeared.
Then disappeared.
"I lost control."
Clara stared at him.
"No."
Her voice was shaking.
"You showed who you really are."
He looked at her.
"My daughter."
She flinched.
"Don't call me that."
The words shocked him.
Because Clara had always obeyed.
Always.
Not anymore.
She threw the files onto the desk.
"You made my whole life a lie."
He looked at both of us.
Then said the sentence that changed everything.
"I did it because I had no choice."
I stepped closer.
"Everyone says that."
He looked at me.
"You want the truth?"
A pause.
"Fine."
His eyes turned dark.
"Your mother didn't lose one child."
He looked between us.
"She lost both."
Elena froze.
"What?"
My father's smile returned.
"I didn't separate you."
The room went cold.
"I saved you."
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then he said:
"Because if I hadn't..."
May you like
A pause.
"You would both be dead."
