Chapter 6 - The Siege of the Ghost

The rain began to pour as our three black SUVs pulled up to the perimeter of the abandoned manufacturing facility. The building was a concrete monolith, its windows boarded up, a perfect fortress for a woman who lived in the shadows.

I wore a dark tactical vest, walking alongside Leo and four heavily armed security contractors. We entered through the subterranean utility tunnel—a blind spot in the facility's security design that I had identified on the blueprints.

We moved silently through the dark hallways, our flashlights cutting through the dust, until we reached the upper laboratory wing. Through a reinforced glass partition, I saw her.

Rebecca—no longer wearing the angelic blue dress, but a sleek, dark jumpsuit. She was pacing back and forth in front of a medical bed. Laying on the bed was a young woman, visibly pregnant, hooked up to a fetal monitor. The steady, beautiful sound of a baby's heartbeat—Theodore's heartbeat—echoed through the small room.

Rebecca was holding a syringe, her face twisted in a manic, desperate panic as she stared at her phone. "Why hasn't the wire cleared yet?" she muttered to herself.

I couldn't wait for a tactical signal. The sight of that needle near the room where my son was fighting for his life shattered my restraint.

I kicked the reinforced door open, the frame splintering with a deafening crash.

"Drop it, Rebecca!" I roared, my weapon raised, the security team instantly flooding the room, flanking her from every angle.

Rebecca shrieked, spinning around, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief as she looked at me. "Mark?! How... how did you find this place?!"

"I design structures for a living, Rebecca. You built your entire life on a lie, which means your foundation was always garbage," I said, stepping closer, my eyes locked on the syringe. "Step away from the bed. It's over."

Realizing she was entirely cornered, Rebecca’s manic smile returned, an ugly, venomous expression. She raised the syringe toward the surrogate's IV line. "If I go down, Mark, your legacy goes down with me! One push of this potassium chloride and your precious little boy stops beating!"

"I don't think so," Leo's voice boomed from the doorway.

Before Rebecca could press the plunger, a sharp, concussive pop echoed through the room.

Leo had fired a non-lethal beanbag round, striking Rebecca squarely in the shoulder.

The force sent her crashing against the medical cabinets, the syringe flying from her hand and shattering on the floor. The security contractors swarmed her instantly, pinning her to the ground and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

"Mark Kane!" Rebecca screamed, thrashing wildly as she was dragged out into the hallway. "You're nothing! You're a fool! I took everything from you!"

I didn't even look at her. I rushed to the side of the bed, reaching for the hand of the terrified surrogate mother. "It's okay. You're safe. I'm Mark, the father. You're entirely safe now."
