Chapter 4 - Sparks in the Shadows

That night, the top-floor penthouse of the Cross Tower overlooked the brilliant, shimmering lights of the Manhattan skyline.

The battle in the media was raging, but inside the penthouse, the atmosphere was quiet, warm, and charged with an undeniable, simmering tension.

I stood on the glass balcony, a soft cashmere shawl wrapped around my shoulders, holding a glass of red wine. My back still ached from the exhaustion of the day, but for the first time in my life, I felt truly free. My father and Marcus were currently being processed at the federal precinct downtown, unable to raise the five-million-dollar bail set by the judge.

The balcony door slid open softly.

Adrian walked out, holding his own glass. He had discarded his tie and jacket, the top two buttons of his dark shirt undone, revealing the strong lines of his throat.

"Victoria’s lawyers called three times in the last hour," Adrian said, leaning against the glass railing beside me. "They’re offering a total settlement. She's surrendering her ten percent debt claim in exchange for us withholding the environmental report from the press."

"Did you accept?" I asked, sipping my wine.

"I told them we’d think about it," Adrian smiled, looking at me sideways. "Depending on how my CEO feels."

I chuckled softly, looking out at the city. "Your CEO thinks Victoria looked very small when she realized she wasn't the smartest person in the room."

Adrian didn't laugh. He turned his body fully toward me, setting his glass down on the small table. He looked at me with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat.

"You surprised me today, Evelyn," he said, his voice dropping an octave, rich and velvety. "Actually, you’ve done nothing but surprise me since the moment I peeled that mask off."

"Did you expect me to cry?" I asked softly, stepping slightly closer to him. "Did you think I would fall to my knees and beg for my family?"

"I expected a victim," Adrian admitted, his hand reaching out, his warm fingers gently tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. "I prepared for ten years to wage a war against monsters. I never planned on finding an ally... let alone a woman who could make Wall Street bow in a single afternoon."

My skin burned where his fingers touched my cheek. My breath hitched.

For weeks, our relationship had been built on vengeance, contracts, and legal maneuvers. But standing here, under the midnight sky, the cold strategy melted away, leaving something far more dangerous between us.

"Are we still just allies, Adrian?" I whispered, my eyes searching his.

Adrian’s gaze dropped to my lips. His hand moved down to the back of my neck, his thumb gently resting against my pulse point. I could feel his heart beating fast, mirroring my own.

"On the night of our wedding," Adrian murmured, leaning in until his breath brushed against my forehead, "I told you that you were never my target."

"I remember," I breathed.

"I was wrong," he whispered.

He leaned down and kissed me.

It wasn't a soft, tentative kiss. It was deep, possessive, and electric—a sudden release of all the hidden heat, tension, and passion that had been building between us since our first night in the bridal suite. My hands moved up involuntarily, clutching the soft fabric of his shirt, pulling him closer. He wrapped his arms around my waist, lifting me slightly against him, deepening the kiss until I was breathless.

When he finally pulled back, his forehead rested against mine, his dark eyes burning with an intense, fierce light.

"You were never just an ally, Evelyn," he whispered against my lips. "You are my wife. And I protect what is mine."

Before I could answer, a loud, sharp electronic alarm chimed from inside the penthouse.

Adrian’s body went rigid instantly. He pulled back, his eyes snapping toward the living room.

"What is that?" I asked, my heart still pounding from the kiss.

"The perimeter security alert at the Waterfront construction site," Adrian said, his tone turning instantly sharp and lethal. "Someone just breached the primary vault where the physical land deeds are kept."
