Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Kingpin

Dominic took a step forward, his movements deliberate, like a predator unsure if he was seeing a mirage. The cold, untouchable aura that usually surrounded him seemed to crack, revealing a raw, long-hidden vulnerability.
"Claire," he said again, his voice cracking slightly. "It's really you."
Claire backed away, her spine hitting the cold concrete wall of the corridor. "Dominic. What... what are you doing here?"
"My associate was shot," Dominic said, his eyes scanning her face, taking in every detail—the dark hair wet with melted snow, the pale skin, the desperate terror in her eyes. "He’s in surgery. But you... Claire, you haven't been in Chicago for thirteen years. Why are you here?"
Before Claire could answer, Dr. Hart walked out of the pediatric ICU doors, holding a clipboard.
"Ms. Monroe," the doctor said, calling out to Claire. "Lily is settled now. You can come in and see her."
Dominic’s eyes snapped from Claire to Dr. Hart, and then back to Claire. "Ms. Monroe? Lily?"
Claire felt a cold sweat break out across her neck. She had to get away from him. If he saw Lily, if he put the pieces together, the secret she had guarded with her life would be shattered.
"I have to go, Dominic," Claire said, her voice trembling as she tried to brush past him. "My daughter... my daughter is in the ICU. Please, let me go."
"Your daughter?" Dominic asked, his hand reaching out to gently grasp her elbow. The warmth of his touch was a violent shock to her system, a memory of a life she had forced herself to forget. "Claire, wait. Your daughter... she’s the one who was in the car accident? The thirteen-year-old?"
"Yes," Claire choked out, trying to pull her arm away, but Dominic’s grip, though gentle, was unyielding.
"The girl who needed the blood," Dominic whispered, his eyes widening as a sudden, staggering realization hit him. "The AB-negative girl."
Aaron Mercer stepped forward, his eyes darting between Claire and Dominic. "Dominic, the nurse said the girl's name was Lily Monroe. She’s thirteen."
"Thirteen," Dominic repeated, the word sounding like a heavy weight in his chest. He looked at Claire, his gaze turning incredibly sharp, searching her eyes for the truth. "Claire... you left me thirteen years ago. You told me you wanted a fresh start. You told me you wanted nothing to do with my world."
"I did," Claire said, her tears finally overflowing. "And I still don't, Dominic! Please, just let us live!"
"If she’s thirteen," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register that made the hair on the back of Claire's neck stand up, "that means she was conceived right before you left. But the doctors told me... they told me I was sterile. They told me I could never have a child."
"They were right!" Claire lied, her voice rising in a panicked pitch. "She isn't yours, Dominic! Her father... her father was a man I met right after I left Chicago. He’s dead now. He was AB-negative, just like her. It's a coincidence. It's just a horrible coincidence!"
Dominic stared at her. For thirteen years, he had lived with the absolute certainty that he would die alone, that his empire would have no heir, that his bloodline ended with him. But looking at Claire’s terrified, defensive posture, the pieces of the puzzle began to violently align in his mind.
"Aaron," Dominic said, not breaking eye contact with Claire.
"Yes, boss?"
"Call Dr. Vance. Tell him to bring a private DNA collection kit to the VIP wing immediately. I want a rapid familial analysis run on the blood I just donated and the patient in Trauma Two."
"Dominic, no!" Claire screamed, grabbing his lapels, her pride entirely vanishing. "You can't do this! You have no right! She is my daughter! You walked away from us!"
"I walked away because I thought you hated me," Dominic said, his voice thick with a sudden, devastating grief. "I walked away because I thought I had nothing to offer you but a grave. But if that girl in there is my daughter... if you kept my child from me for thirteen years, Claire... then everything I thought I knew about my life is a lie."

He gently but firmly removed her hands from his coat.
"Let's see what the blood says," Dominic said coldly.
