Chapter 4: The Daughter He Abandoned

Chapter 4: The Daughter He Abandoned
For several minutes, neither Claire nor I spoke.
The photograph sat between us.
A smiling Ethan.
A younger version of him.
A version I had never seen.
His arm was around a little girl.
A little girl with his eyes.
My eyes moved back to Claire.
“Seven years old?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
I shook my head slowly.
“No.”
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Not because I didn’t believe her.
Because I did.
And that was the terrifying part.
Because suddenly, everything about Ethan’s behavior made sense.
The disappearing weekends.
The unexplained business trips.
The strange phone calls he always took outside.
The way he avoided conversations about having another child.
I had thought he was simply overwhelmed.
Now I wondered if he had been hiding.
“How long have you known about me?” I asked.
Claire looked down.
“Almost two years.”
Two years.
The same amount of time Ethan had been with Vanessa.
My stomach turned.
“Did he know you contacted me?”
“No.”
“Does he know you’re here?”
“No.”
I stared at the woman sitting in front of me.
A stranger.
A woman who had every reason to hate me.
But instead, she looked like someone who was tired of carrying a secret.
“What happened?”
Claire took a slow breath.
“Ethan and I were married before you.”
I nodded.
“I know.”
“No, Rachel.”
Her voice became quiet.
“You know the story he told you.”
That sentence hit me.
Because it was the same thing Vanessa had said.
The same warning.
There were always two versions of Ethan.
The one he created.
And the one left behind.
Claire continued.
“When we divorced, he promised he would always be part of Emily’s life.”
She looked at the photo.
“He cried. He begged me not to keep his daughter away from him.”
I listened carefully.
“Then what?”
“He disappeared.”
My heart sank.
“Completely?”
Claire nodded.
“At first, he called every week.”
Her eyes became distant.
“Then every month.”
A pause.
“Then nothing.”
I looked at the little girl in the photograph.
“What did he tell you?”
“That he was busy.”
The same excuse.
The same sentence.
The same man.
“He told me his career needed attention. That he would make it up to her.”
Claire laughed sadly.
“You know what he bought Emily for her fifth birthday?”
I didn’t answer.
“A gift.”
I waited.
“That arrived by delivery.”
My throat tightened.
“He didn’t even come?”
She shook her head.
“He didn’t.”
The room felt heavy.
Because Lily had asked for something so simple.
A father who showed up.
And Ethan couldn’t even give that.
That night, I didn’t tell Lily.
She was too young.
Too hurt.
She didn’t need another adult problem placed on her tiny shoulders.
Instead, I sat beside her bed.
Watching her sleep.
Her small hand held the edge of my shirt.
As if she was afraid I would disappear too.
My phone buzzed.
A message from my lawyer.
Rachel, we found something. You need to see this immediately.
I opened the attachment.
A bank record.
Then another.
Then another.
My heart started racing.
Payments.
Large payments.
To Vanessa.
From Ethan.
Not just gifts.
Not just expensive dinners.
Monthly transfers.
For years.
I read the message again.
This may affect custody proceedings.
I stared at the screen.
For years, Ethan told me our family budget was tight.
For years, I carefully planned groceries.
For years, I reused Lily’s clothes.
While he was secretly funding another woman’s lifestyle.
I felt something inside me finally break.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disgust.
The next morning, Ethan came to the house.
This time, he didn’t look confident.
He looked exhausted.
Like the world had finally caught up to him.
“I need to talk.”
I opened the door but didn’t let him inside.
“What about?”
His eyes moved upstairs.
“Lily.”
“She’s sleeping.”
“Can I see her?”
“No.”
His face tightened.
“You can’t keep doing this.”
I smiled coldly.
“You mean I can’t keep protecting her?”
“Rachel.”
“No.”
I held up the bank statements.
His face changed.
Immediately.
“What is that?”
“You tell me.”
He looked at the papers.
Then away.
“You went through my finances?”
“My lawyer did.”
His jaw tightened.
“This is private.”
I laughed softly.
“You lost the right to call anything private when you involved another woman in our child’s life.”
“That’s not—”
“Who is Emily?”
Silence.
A dangerous silence.
His expression changed.
A tiny flicker of fear.
And that was all I needed.
“You know her.”
He didn’t answer.
“Ethan.”
My voice became sharper.
“Who is Emily?”
Finally, he whispered:
“Claire told you.”
I froze.
“You knew she was coming?”
“No.”
He looked away.
“But I knew this day would come.”
I stared at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
He had no answer.
Because there was no excuse.
“Rachel, it’s complicated.”
I stepped back.
“Everything with you is complicated.”
“Please listen.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I listened for ten years.”
My eyes filled.
“I listened when you said work was stressful.”
“I listened when you said you were tired.”
“I listened when you said I was overreacting.”
I pointed upstairs.
“And I listened when my daughter asked why her father didn’t love her enough to show up.”
His face fell.
“That’s not true.”
“Isn’t it?”
He whispered:
“I love Lily.”
I nodded.
“Then why did you do this?”
He had nothing.
Nothing.
Two hours later, Vanessa called.
I almost didn’t answer.
But I did.
“Rachel.”
Her voice was shaking.
“What do you want?”
“I need to talk.”
“About what?”
“Ethan.”
I almost laughed.
“What about him?”
A pause.
Then she said:
“He lied to me too.”
I stayed silent.
“He told me he was leaving you.”
My eyes narrowed.
“He promised you that?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Months ago.”
I felt something strange.
Not surprise.
Because of course.
Of course Ethan had been telling everyone different versions.
“He told me you were staying together only because of Lily.”
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“I believed him.”
For the first time, she didn’t sound like an enemy.
She sounded like someone who had finally realized she had been used.
“What do you want from me?”
Her answer surprised me.
“Help me.”
I almost hung up.
Almost.
“Why would I help you?”
Because she was part of what destroyed my family.
Because she hurt my daughter.
Because she deserved consequences.
Then she said something that made me stop.
“Because I know where Ethan hid the documents.”
“What documents?”
“The ones that prove he planned everything.”
My heartbeat increased.
“What are you talking about?”
“Rachel…”
Her voice lowered.
“Ethan didn’t just cheat.”
A pause.
“He was preparing to replace you.”
I felt cold.
“Explain.”
“I found emails.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What emails?”
“Emails about you.”
The silence stretched.
“He was building a case.”
My blood ran cold.
“A case?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa whispered:
“He wanted custody of Lily.”
I couldn’t breathe.
The man who ignored his daughter.
The man who hurt her.
The man who abandoned another child.
Wanted to take my baby away.
“Where are the emails?”
Vanessa answered quietly.
“I have them.”
I closed my eyes.
The battle had changed.
This wasn’t about a divorce anymore.
This was a war.
And Ethan Whitmore had just made the biggest mistake of his life.
May you like
He underestimated a mother protecting her child.
