Chapter 5 - The Final Judgment

The jury deliberation took less than forty-five minutes.
When the foreperson stood to read the verdict, the tension in the courtroom was thick enough to cut with a knife. Emily held her father's hand tightly from the front row, feeling her baby kick gently against her palm, as if he too was waiting for justice.
"On the count of aggravated domestic assault against a pregnant dependent, how do you find the defendant, Ryan Davis?"
"Guilty, Your Honor."
"On the count of federal identity fraud and grand larceny?"
"Guilty, Your Honor."
"On the count of conspiracy to commit extortion and illegal interstate smuggling?"
"Guilty, Your Honor."
A wave of relief washed over Emily, so intense that she buried her face in her father's shoulder, sobbing tears of pure, unadulterated freedom. The Colonel wrapped his strong arms around her, his chest rising and falling as he finally let out the breath he had been holding for months.
The judge looked down at Ryan and Linda, his voice echoing like thunder through the silent courtroom.
"Ryan Davis, your actions are a stain on civil society. You abused the woman who trusted you, endangered an unborn life, and used systematic psychological and physical torture to fulfill your financial greed. I sentence you to twenty-five years in a federal penitentiary, with absolute zero possibility of early parole."
Ryan slumped forward, his head hitting the defense table, his life completely ruined.
"Linda Davis," the judge continued, turning his glare to the mother. "You participated in the systematic abuse of a pregnant woman and actively covered up violent felonies. I sentence you to twelve years in a federal facility."
As the US Marshals stepped forward to chain Ryan and Linda in heavy leg irons, Ryan looked up one last time, his eyes desperately searching for Emily. "Emily! Please! I’m sorry! Tell them to reduce it! I’m the father of your child!"
Emily stood up, leaning against her father. She didn't look at Ryan with anger anymore; she looked at him with absolute pity.

"You are not his father, Ryan," Emily said, her voice carrying across the courtroom. "You are just a stranger I used to know. My son will have only one male role model in his life—a man of honor, duty, and unconditional love. He will be raised by a Colonel."
As the heavy metal doors shut behind the convicts, the media swarmed the hallway, but Colonel Bennett’s security detail quickly cleared a path. They walked out of the courthouse into the bright, warm afternoon sunshine, leaving the dark nightmare behind them forever.
