Chapter 3 - The Eviction of Shadows

By eleven o'clock that evening, the grand mansion on Windmere Ridge was completely empty of party guests.

The eighty venture capitalists, socialites, and corrupt corporate executives had fled like rats from a sinking ship, leaving behind half-empty martini glasses, overturned velvet chairs, and crushed rose petals on the driveway outside.

Inside the grand parlor, the ambient lighting had been replaced by the stark, sterile glare of work lamps brought in by the federal auditing team. Box after box of financial records, hard drives, and private safes were being carried out to black vans parked in the courtyard.

Adrian sat on the edge of a leather sofa, his head buried in his hands, his hands trembling violently. Vanessa stood near the fireplace, frantically typing on her phone, her luggage already packed into three designer suitcases resting by the front door.

"He's not answering!" Vanessa cried, slamming her phone against her hip. "My father's lawyer said he won't touch this case, Adrian! He said your firm is radioactive!"

"Shut up, Vanessa," Adrian muttered through his teeth, not looking up. "Just shut the fuck up."

"Don't you dare talk to me like that!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice turning high-pitched and hysterical. "You told me you were worth fifty million dollars! You told me this house was yours! I left my husband for you!"

"You left your husband because he went bankrupt, Vanessa," I said smoothly, walking into the parlor supported by Arthur Pendelton on one side and a private female paramedic on the other.

I had changed out of my torn nightgown into a soft, dark velvet robe. The paramedic had administered an emergency IV drip, stabilizing my blood pressure and ensuring the twins' fetal heartbeats remained strong and steady.

Vanessa turned her glare onto me, her nostrils flaring with pure hatred. "You think you won, Mara? Look at you! You're a battered, pathetic cripple whose husband cheated on her under her own roof!"

"I don't think I won, Vanessa," I said, taking a seat in a plush armchair across from the sofa. "I know I won. And as for this roof..."

Arthur stepped forward, handing a thick sheaf of legal notices to Adrian and Vanessa.

"These are formal eviction executions," Arthur stated calmly. "The deed to this property was held under Sterling Real Estate LLC. As of 9:30 PM, Apex Holdings foreclosed on all real estate assets held by the LLC. You have fifteen minutes to vacate the premises."

Adrian snapped his head up, his eyes bloodshot and wild. "Fifteen minutes?! This is my home! My clothes are upstairs! My watches! My art collection!"

"The art collection was purchased with funds embezzled from Vanguard," Arthur corrected, pulling out a detailed inventory list. "The watches were purchased with company credit lines. They are federal evidence now, Mr. Sterling. You may leave with the clothes on your back and your personal identification."

"And what about my villa in St. Barts?!" Vanessa screamed, pointing her manicured finger at Arthur's face. "I bought that property in my own name!"

"The paper trail proves the funds used for the down payment were wired directly from Mara’s private trust account without authorization," Arthur smiled thinly. "The French authorities served an asset freeze on that villa forty-five minutes ago."

Vanessa’s face went entirely white. She dropped her designer handbag, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, unable to form a single word.

Adrian stood up slowly, stepping toward me with his hands outstretched, his voice dropping into a desperate, pathetic whine. "Mara... please. Think about the babies. Think about our family! I made a mistake! I was under so much stress with the firm! Vanessa meant nothing to me! She seduced me, Mara! She manipulated me!"

Vanessa gasped in utter outrage. "You lying bastard! You begged me to move in here!"

"Mara, look at me!" Adrian pleaded, ignoring Vanessa completely as he dropped to his knees on the rug before my chair. "We can fix this! I’ll go to rehab! I’ll go to counseling! I’ll sign whatever custody agreement you want! Just don't destroy my life! Don't send me to prison!"

I looked down at the man who had dragged me across the floor, who had kicked my spine while I carried his unborn children, who had let his mistress mock my pain.

I reached out, gently lifting his chin with two fingers, forcing him to look at the purple bruise blooming along my jawline.

"Do you remember what you said to me an hour ago, Adrian?" I asked softly.

Adrian swallowed hard, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. "Mara... please..."

May you like

"'Stop milking this pregnancy and make my guests some drinks,'" I repeated, my voice as cold as absolute zero. "Well, the party is over, Adrian. And you have to pay the tab."

I motioned to the two private security guards standing near the doorway. "Escort Mr. Sterling and Miss Cole off my property. If they step back onto the lawn, have them arrested for criminal trespass."
