Chapter 17

The crisp and freezing winds of late November swept across the busy university campus,

sending a flurry of golden and brown leaves dancing through the cold autumn air.

Emma wrapped her thick wool scarf tightly around her neck to block the freezing chill,

hurrying across the historic stone courtyard toward the main journalism building.

She was carrying a heavy leather messenger bag filled with important interview notes,

and her mind was racing with brilliant ideas for her next investigative feature story.

Her previous article about the corrupt housing practices had created a massive impact,

forcing the local city council to immediately launch a formal and thorough investigation.

She pushed open the heavy glass doors of the busy newspaper office with a bright smile,

greeting her fellow student writers who were typing furiously at their computer desks.

Her senior editor called her into a small and cluttered glass office near the back,

handing her a freshly printed copy of the upcoming weekend edition of the newspaper.

Emma saw her name printed in bold black ink right at the top of the front page,

and a rush of absolute pride and pure excitement flooded through her entire body.

She had been assigned a complex and difficult story about environmental pollution,

and she had spent three long weeks interviewing scientists and affected local citizens.

The editor praised her relentless dedication and her sharp and articulate writing style,

telling her that she had a brilliant and promising future in professional journalism.

Emma thanked him politely and walked back to her desk with a glowing and happy heart,

pulling out her mobile phone to immediately text her parents the wonderful news.

She knew that her father would be incredibly proud of her hard work and dedication,

because Daniel had always taught her the true value of relentless and honest grit.

Later that evening she sat on her dorm bed with a hot cup of green tea in her hands,

dialing her parents' home phone number for their traditional Sunday evening chat.

Rachel answered the phone on the very first ring with a cheerful and loving voice,

and Daniel quickly joined the conversation from his comfortable leather armchair.

Emma talked for nearly an hour about her classes and her exciting new newspaper article,

laughing loudly at her father's dry jokes and her mother's gentle and sweet advice.

Daniel listened to the sound of his daughter's bright and confident laughter,

feeling a deep and protective warmth radiating through his chest like a quiet fire.

He did not mention the recent and lonely death of Richard Mercer during the phone call,

wanting to protect Emma's pure happiness from the dark shadows of his own childhood.

He knew that there would be a proper and quiet time to share the solemn news later,

perhaps when she came home for the upcoming and festive Thanksgiving holiday break.

For now he just wanted to listen to her talk about her big dreams and bright future,

basking in the incredible light of the beautiful and smart woman she was becoming.

When the long phone call finally ended with warm and loving goodbyes,

Daniel placed the telephone back on the receiver and looked affectionately at Rachel.

He told his wife that they needed to plan a very special and grand Thanksgiving dinner,

because they had so many wonderful and beautiful things to be truly grateful for this year.

Rachel smiled brightly and immediately started making a long list of delicious recipes,

planning to bake her famous pumpkin pie and roast a massive and juicy turkey.

Daniel walked over to the large living room window and looked out at the dark street,

watching the gentle snowflakes begin to slowly fall from the quiet winter sky.

The contrast between his warm home and the cold reality of Richard's lonely death was stark,

and it served as a powerful reminder of the absolute importance of love and kindness.

He placed his large hand against the cold window glass and breathed out a slow sigh,

feeling completely detached from the tragic and bitter legacy of the Mercer family name.

He had built a completely new and honorable legacy based on hard work and pure truth,

and his daughter was currently carrying that bright torch forward into the beautiful future.

Daniel turned away from the cold window and walked back to the warm and bright kitchen,

ready to help his wonderful wife prepare for the happiest holiday of their entire lives.
