Chapter 3 - The Threat at the Door

The next morning, the financial world was in a state of absolute chaos. The Vance Corporation’s stock was fluctuating wildly, and the Sterling Bank had been forced to release three separate PR statements claiming that the wedding incident was a "malicious stunt perpetrated by an unstable individual."

Elena sat at her kitchen table, a laptop open in front of her. Marcus had arrived at dawn, bringing a team of technical analysts who were currently sweeping the apartment for digital surveillance.

Leo was in the small second bedroom, coloring with a box of markers Marcus had brought him. For the first time, the boy looked at peace, though he still jumped slightly whenever a heavy truck passed by outside.

"We ran a background check on the name Clara Reyes," Marcus said, tossing a thick folder onto the table. He looked tired, his eyes sharp with anger. "Our team located her medical records. She died in a state-run facility on the outskirts of the city three weeks ago. The cause of death was listed as kidney failure, but the facility is notorious for taking bribes to neglect patients."

Elena covered her face with her hands, a deep wave of guilt washing over her. "She died trying to protect my son. She kept him hidden for six years because she knew what my mother and Julian would do."

"According to her neighbors in the slums, Clara was constantly moving," Marcus explained. "She knew she was being followed. Right before she was admitted to the hospital, she gave Leo the photo and told him to find you if she didn't come back. The boy walked for three days across the city to get to that hotel because he saw the wedding announcement in a discarded newspaper."

Suddenly, the apartment's main security monitor buzzed.

One of Marcus’s security guards looked at the screen and his posture immediately went rigid. "Sir, we have a breach at the main gate. It's Julian Sterling. He didn't come with lawyers. He came with a private tactical enforcement team from the Sterling Bank's asset protection unit."

Elena stood up, her blood running cold. "How did he find us?"

"The Porsche," Marcus cursed under his breath. "The car’s built-in GPS is tied to the Vance corporate server. Victoria must have tracked the vehicle's location."

"Give me the boy!" Julian’s muffled voice boomed from the hallway outside the apartment door a few moments later. The heavy oak door rattled as his men attempted to force the electronic lock. "Elena! Open this door! You are committing corporate sabotage! You signed a prenuptial agreement that binds your assets to the Sterling Group! If you don't hand over that child, I will have the police arrest you for kidnapping!"

Marcus drew a concealed firearm from his jacket, stepping in front of the door, signaling his men to take defensive positions around the hallway entry. "Julian! Step away from the door! You are on private property, and I have authorization to use lethal force!"

"Marcus? You're hiding here too?" Julian laughed, a dark, arrogant sound that lacked any of his usual public charm. "You think your little security firm can stand against the Sterling family? The Chief of Police is a major shareholder in our bank. By noon today, that boy will be classified as a ward of the state, and he will be placed in a facility where no one will ever hear from him again!"

Inside the bedroom, Leo began to cry, the old terror returning instantly. He ran out, throwing his arms around Elena’s legs. "Mommy! Don't let the man with the silver watch take me! Please! I'll be good! I won't eat anymore bread!"

Hearing her son’s desperate plea, something inside Elena clicked. The fear vanished, replaced by an ancient, terrifying wrath. She gently untangled Leo from her legs and handed him to one of Marcus’s trusted guards.

"Take him into the secure panic room in the back," Elena commanded.

She then walked directly to the front door. Marcus tried to stop her, but she pushed his arm down. "Open it, Marcus. Let him see what he's actually dealing with."

Marcus nodded grimly, pressing the electronic release. The heavy door clicked open.

Julian stood in the hallway, flanked by four armed security guards in black tactical gear. He looked flawless, his platinum silver watch glittering under the hallway lights, but his eyes were wide with a desperate, manic rage.

"Elena, finally," Julian sneered, stepping forward. "Stop this ridiculous drama. Hand over the kid, come back to the estate, sign the revised marriage validation papers, and we can pretend this little psychological episode never happened."

Elena didn't step back. She looked Julian directly in the eye, her expression so cold it made his armed guards hesitate.

"You took my son from my arms while I was sedated," Elena said, her voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly whisper. "You paid off doctors to lie to me. You hunted a poor woman until she died of neglect. And you think you can walk in here and threaten me with your money?"

"It's not just money, Elena. It's power," Julian hissed, leaning close. "And you have none. Your mother has already frozen your corporate accounts. You are broke. You have no standing. Give me the boy, or I will ruin you completely."

"I don't need my mother's money, Julian," Elena replied, a slow, dark smile appearing on her face. She pulled her phone from her pocket, showing him the screen. It was displaying a live, encrypted stream. "Every word you just said out there in the hallway... every threat about the Chief of Police, every admission of corporate control over my assets... it was just broadcast live to an offshore independent media server managed by Marcus’s firm."

Julian’s face drained of color. He looked at the phone, then at Marcus, who was smiling grimly.

"The broadcast went live five minutes ago, Julian," Elena said, her voice filled with absolute triumph. "Right now, the international press is watching the heir to the Sterling Bank threaten a mother to cover up a child-stealing conspiracy. Your stocks are dropping as we speak. The war hasn't just come to your door, Julian. It's already inside your house."
