Chapter 2 - The Lion's Den

The Salazar estate in Las Lomas was a fortress of elegance. Unlike the cold, showy minimalism of Santiago’s mansion, my childhood home was built of old stone, dark wood, and centuries of unquestioned authority. It was a place where history was made, not bought.
I sat in the massive library, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, sipping warm tea. Dr. Silva, our family physician who had taken care of me since I was a child, had just finished checking my vitals and performing a portable ultrasound.
"The baby is perfectly healthy, Valeria," Dr. Silva said, wiping the gel from my stomach with a gentle smile. "Your blood pressure is slightly elevated, which is expected given the circumstances, but your son is a fighter. He’s growing exactly as he should."
"Thank you, Doctor," I breathed, letting out a sigh of relief. For the past eight months, every medical appointment had been supervised by Beatriz’s hand-picked doctors, who constantly dropped subtle, terrifying hints that I was 'deficient' or 'at risk'—all part of their paper trail to prove me unfit. To hear a trusted doctor tell me my baby was safe felt like water in a desert.
As Dr. Silva left, the heavy oak doors of the library opened, and Alejandro Vargas walked in. Alejandro was my father’s chief legal counsel, a man whose reputation in the Mexican judicial system was legendary. He looked like a silver-screen actor but possessed the mind of a tactical grandmaster. Behind him came my father, still carrying the lingering aura of fury from earlier that night.
"Valeria," Alejandro said, bowing his head slightly in respect. "I have reviewed the audio and video feeds from the hidden device in the Rivas living room. To say we have enough to ruin them legally is an understatement. We have extortion, corporate fraud, conspiracy to commit unlawful confinement, and domestic abuse."
"Can we arrest them tonight?" I asked, my fingers tightening around my tea cup.
Alejandro sighed, sitting across from me. "We could. But if we do it tonight, Santiago’s PR team will spin it. They will claim you are an estranged wife throwing wild accusations to affect the stock price before the foundation gala tomorrow. The Rivas family has deep roots in the local police departments. A standard arrest warrant might get 'delayed' or caught up in bureaucratic red tape long enough for them to destroy evidence."
My father slammed his fist on the desk. "I don't care about red tape, Alejandro! I want that bastard in a cage by dawn!"
"Papa, wait," I said, my voice surprisingly calm. Both men looked at me. The meek schoolteacher was gone; the daughter of Ricardo Salazar was fully awakening. "Alejandro is right. Santiago’s entire identity is built on his public image. The 'Billionaire Philanthropist.' The 'Perfect Husband.' If we destroy him privately, he will fight dirty behind closed doors. But if we pull the rug out from under him while the entire high society is watching..."
A slow, calculating smile spread across Alejandro’s face. "The Foundation Gala tomorrow night. The Rivas Family Care Foundation."
"Exactly," I said, a cold fire burning in my chest. "Beatriz mentioned it tonight. She told Santiago not to leave bruises that could be photographed because she needs him to look perfect for the cameras. They plan to use that gala to solidify their public standing before locking me away. Let's give them the stage they want."
"What are you thinking, mi cielo?" my father asked, his anger shifting into pride as he watched me take control of the strategy.
"They think I’m terrified, hiding in some hole," I explained. "They don't know that the public is about to find out who I really am. Tomorrow night, Santiago expects to stand on that stage alone, announcing a massive charitable donation to boost his image. Instead, I will attend. Not as Valeria Mendoza, the victim. But as Valeria Salazar, the heiress who owns half his empire."
"It's risky," Alejandro warned. "The stress—"
"The stress of staying silent was killing me, Alejandro," I interrupted, looking down at my stomach. "For two years, I let them diminish me. For two years, I listened to Beatriz tell me I was charity, a nobody from the streets who should be grateful for their scraps. I did it because I wanted peace. But peace without justice is just submission. I am done submitting."
My father walked over, kneeling beside my chair, taking my hands in his. "The Salazar Group has quietly acquired 34% of Rivas Enterprises over the last year through various shell companies, Valeria. I did it as a safety net for you, in case he ever proved unworthy. With your own shares and the leverage we hold over their primary creditors, we can force an emergency board meeting within twenty-four hours."
"Let's do it during the gala," I whispered. "While the flashbulbs are going off."
Suddenly, my father’s phone buzzed on the table. He picked it up, his expression darkening as he read the screen. He clicked a button and put it on speaker.
“Mr. Salazar,” Santiago’s voice came through, shaking but filled with a desperate, malicious venom. “I know you think you’ve won because you took her. But you tell your daughter that she has until noon tomorrow to sign the asset transfer documents. If she doesn't, the medical files I have compiled will be leaked to every major news outlet. The world will know that the great Ricardo Salazar’s daughter is a clinically insane woman who hid her identity to trap a billionaire. I will ruin her reputation so thoroughly that no court will ever grant her custody of that child.”
Santiago paused, taking a ragged breath, waiting for a response.
I reached out and pressed the talk button myself.
"Santiago," I said, my voice cutting through the line like a razor.
A gasp echoed from the other end. “Valeria? You—"’
"Make sure your suit is pressed for tomorrow night, Santiago," I said smoothly. "And tell Beatriz to wear her favorite diamonds. You’ll want to look your best for the cameras. Because tomorrow, the world is going to see exactly what you are."
May you like
Before he could answer, I disconnected the call. I looked up at my father and Alejandro.
"Alejandro, prepare the disclosure documents," I commanded. "Papa, call the press. Tomorrow night, we hunt."
