Chapter 2 - The Architecture of Deceit

Julian, the stranger, slowly raised his hands. "I'm leaving. I don't want any trouble."

"You're not going anywhere until I get my answers," Edward said, pulling a smartphone from his pocket. "I’ve already dialed the security detail at the front gate. The police are on their way for trespassing and breaking and entering."

"Edward, no! Don't call the police!" Clara pleaded, dropping to her knees beside his wheelchair. She tried to grab his hand, but he pulled it away as if her touch was poison. "If you call them, the press will find out. Your family’s company... the stock prices... everything will collapse!"

Edward let out a bitter, hollow laugh. "You're worried about the company? After you turned our living room into a cheap motel? After you hid your lover inside the furniture my father bought us?"

"He's not my lover!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking with desperation.

Both Edward and Julian froze. Julian looked at Clara, his eyes widening in warning. "Clara, don't," he muttered.

"Then who is he, Clara?" Edward roared, the frustration of three years of confinement pouring out of him. "Who is this man who sneaks into my house, sleeps under my couch, and waits for me to go to sleep or for you to pretend to leave town?"

Clara lowered her head, her forehead touching the cold wooden floor. "He is my brother, Edward. My half-brother."

The silence returned, heavier this time. Edward stared at his wife, searching her face for another lie. Clara had always told him she was an only child, an orphan raised in foster care before they met in college. Her mysterious past was something Edward had always respected, never pushing her to talk about the childhood that pained her.

"Your... brother?" Edward whispered.

Julian sighed, dropping his defensive posture. He slid down against the wall, looking exhausted. "My name is Julian Vance. Clara and I share the same mother. And unlike Clara, who managed to escape our mother’s debt and the syndicates following her... I didn't."
