Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Server

Four hours later, I awoke in the Intensive Care Unit. The hum of heart monitors and the soft rhythmic hiss of oxygen was the only sound in the dimly lit room.

The surgery was complete. My back felt as though a hot iron had been pressed into my spine, but the crushing pressure was gone. I tried to wiggle the toes on my left foot. A microscopic twitch answered back. It was faint, almost imperceptible, but it was life.

"Don't push it too fast," a quiet voice said from the shadows near the window.

I turned my head slowly. Sitting in a chair by the corner was Samuel Vance—not Officer Vance, but his older brother, Samuel, a retired federal prosecutor who now worked as a private forensic investigator. Beside him sat Sarah Chen, still in her paramedic uniform, holding a fresh cup of coffee.

"Samuel," I whispered. "How... how did you get in here?"

"Sarah called me the moment you were brought in," Samuel said, stepping into the dim light. His hair was silver, his face lined with decades of courtroom battles. "Officer Vance told me what happened at the mansion. Bridget, your family is already moving fast. Your father's legal team filed an injunction two hours ago attempting to claim temporary conservatorship over you, claiming you are mentally incompetent due to pain medication."

A cold shudder ran through me. "They want to control my medical decisions so they can drop the charges against Tyler."

"Exactly," Samuel nodded. "And Marcus did wipe the localized security DVR at the mansion. When state troopers executed a search warrant at 6:00 PM, the hard drives were completely blank. Tyler told the police that you slipped while trying to throw a glass at him."

I let out a bitter, raspy laugh. "They think they're so smart."

"Can you prove otherwise?" Samuel asked, leaning forward, resting his hands on his knees.

I pointed toward the bedside table where my leather purse sat. "Sarah, give me my phone."

Sarah picked up my phone and handed it to me. My hands were shaking, but my mind was laser-focused. I opened an encrypted mobile application, entered Grandmother Rose’s master security code, and brought up the cloud server log for the Miller estate.

On the screen, a list of video files appeared, timestamped down to the second.

"They wiped the physical box in the hallway closet," I said, showing the screen to Samuel. "But the camera mounted beneath the second-story eaves is an independent IP camera. It streams directly to the jewelry company’s private cloud server in Boston."

I clicked on the file timestamped 4:36:12 PM.

The video played with crystal-clear high-definition video and audio.

On the screen, my parents were seen standing near the glass doors, watching. Tyler was seen stumbling toward me, shouting about Grandmother’s money. The audio clearly picked up his voice: "If I can't have Rose's fortune, you won't live to spend it!"

Then, the video showed Tyler placing both hands firmly against my chest and shoving me backward with maximum force into the rotted wooden railing, watching coldly as the wood snapped and I plummeted to the ground below.

The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence as the video finished playing.

Samuel stared at the screen, a dark, dangerous smile spreading across his seasoned face. "That isn't just assault, Bridget," he whispered softly. "That is attempted premeditated murder."
