Chapter 1 - The Five-Minute Collapse

The phone screen went black. Adrian stood there, the riding crop still loose in his grip, a mocking smirk plastered on his face.
"Your father?" Adrian scoffed, tossing the crop onto the velvet armchair. "The line cook? Or was he the bankrupt mechanic you claimed raised you in that dirty suburb? You really are losing your mind, Elena."
Vanessa giggled, her fingers tracing the expensive pearls around her neck. "Adrian, darling, don't be too hard on her. When poor people get desperate, they start inventing imaginary saviors. It’s actually quite sad."
I didn't answer. I remained on the cold marble floor, the sharp sting in my back radiating through my entire body. Every breath felt like inhaling shattered glass, but for the first time in three years, the invisible chains around my chest were gone. I looked at the grand grandfather clock at the end of the hall.
One minute.
Adrian turned his back on me, pouring himself a glass of scotch from the crystal decanter. "Tomorrow morning, the lawyers will be here. You will sign the NDA, you will take the five hundred thousand dollars I’m generously offering, and you will vanish. If you try to drag my name through the mud with domestic abuse claims, I will ensure you spend the next ten years in a federal penitentiary for extortion. Do you understand me?"
Three minutes.
Suddenly, Adrian’s personal smartphone—the encrypted one reserved only for the elite board members and international market directors—began to wail. It wasn't his usual soft ringtone; it was the emergency siren alert reserved for catastrophic financial events.
Adrian frowned, setting his scotch down. He pulled the phone from his pocket. His brow furrowed as he looked at the screen. "An unknown international number?"
He answered it, his voice instantly shifting into his commanding, arrogant CEO tone. "This is Adrian Vale."
The voice on the other end was loud enough that even from the floor, I could hear the deep, booming resonance. It was a voice that commanded central banks and altered national GDPs. My father.
"Adrian Vale," my father said, his voice terrifyingly calm, like the eye of a hurricane. "Three years ago, my daughter asked me to let her live a normal life with the man she loved. I warned her that a beast cannot comprehend the value of a angel. You just struck my daughter twenty times. For every lash she took, I will strip one billion dollars from your life. By the time I hang up, you will be nothing."
"Who the hell is this?" Adrian snapped, though a flash of unease crossed his eyes. "Is this a prank? How did you get this number—"
"Goodbye, Mr. Vale," my father whispered.
The call disconnected.
Four minutes.
Before Adrian could even swear, his assistant’s name flashed on the screen. He picked it up immediately. "Marcus, what is the meaning of—"
"Sir! Turn on the news! Look at the terminal!" Marcus’s voice was hysterical, screaming over the sound of alarms in the background. "The Sovereign Wealth Fund of Zurich just pulled their entire twenty-billion-dollar liquidity guarantee! They cited a moral turpitude clause! And it’s not just them—the Kingsley Group, the Vanguard Syndicate, they are all pulling out!"
"What?!" Adrian roared, his face draining of color. "That’s impossible! Those contracts are ironclad for another five years!"
"They don't care about the penalties, sir! They are paying the termination fees upfront! It’s a coordinated execution! Our stock price just plummeted eighty percent in the pre-market trading! The board is calling an emergency meeting to strip you of your CEO title! Adrian... we are completely ruined!"
Five minutes.
Adrian’s hand began to shake violently. The phone slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the blood-speckled marble floor.
Vanessa’s smile froze. She looked at Adrian, her voice trembling. "Adrian? What's wrong? What did he say? It’s just a glitch, right? You’re the king of the financial district!"
Adrian didn't hear her. His eyes slowly drifted downward, landing on me. I was still bleeding, still broken on the floor, but I was looking at him with a cold, serene smile.
"Who..." Adrian’s voice cracked, a horrifying realization dawning in his pupils. "Who is your father?"
May you like
"His name is Arthur Sterling," I whispered softly.
Adrian’s knees buckled. The man who had towered over me like a god just seconds ago collapsed onto the floor, his face pale as a ghost, gasping for air as his empire turned to ash around him.
