Chapter 3 - The Gates of St. Jude’s

Monday morning arrived under a gray, overcast sky.

Brian was up early, wearing a sharp suit, acting unusually energetic. He made pancakes for Noah and Emma, whistling a cheerful tune as if he weren't about to hand his children over to a boarding school against their mother's will.

"Alright, kiddo," Brian said, patting Noah’s shoulder at 8:15 AM. "Finish up. We have to head to the doctor's office for those routine physicals."

Noah looked at me, his eyes wide with anxiety. I gave him a subtle, reassuring nod.

"Mommy isn't coming?" Emma asked, clutching her school backpack tightly.

"Mom has some errands to run," Brian said quickly, kissing the top of Emma’s head. "Don't worry, Daddy’s taking care of everything today."

I stood by the kitchen island, watching them put on their coats. My heart was beating so hard I could hear it in my ears, but I maintained a neutral expression.

"Have a good trip, Brian," I said quietly.

"Thanks, babe. See you around lunch," he replied, giving me a dismissive wave as he herded our children out the front door into his SUV.

The moment his taillights disappeared down the driveway, I grabbed my coat, my purse, and my folder of legal documents. Sarah was already waiting outside in her car.

"Judge signed the emergency order twenty minutes ago," Sarah said as I got into the passenger seat. "You have temporary full custody. Brian's parental rights are suspended pending a full hearing, and a temporary restraining order is in effect against Carol and Brenda."

"Let's go," I said, my voice steady as steel.

St. Jude’s Boarding Academy was an imposing stone facility surrounded by black iron gates, located thirty minutes outside the city. As Sarah drove, my phone buzzed. It was a text from Brian.

Brian: Traffic is a little heavy. Might take longer than expected at the doctor.

I didn't reply.

At 8:50 AM, Sarah pulled up to the stone archway of St. Jude’s. Parked along the curb were two marked sheriff's patrol cars. Two deputies stood near the entrance alongside a professional process server holding a thick manila envelope.

At 8:58 AM, Brian’s black SUV pulled up the long gravel driveway. Carol’s luxury sedan was parked right behind him—she couldn't resist being there to witness her victory.

Brian got out of his car, wearing a triumphant smile as he opened the rear doors to pull Noah and Emma out. Carol and Brenda stepped out of their sedan, wearing matching fur-trimmed coats, looking like queens about to inspect their new domain.

"Come along, children," Carol said bossily, grabbing Emma’s wrist. "This is where you learn proper manners."

"Let go of me!" Emma cried out.

Before Brian could take a single step toward the school’s front doors, Deputy Miller stepped forward, blocking their path.

"Brian Moreland?" the deputy asked sternly.

Brian blinked, caught off guard. "Yes? Is there a problem, Officer? I'm just dropping my children off for an intake appointment."

"Mr. Moreland, you are being served," the process server announced, stepping forward and shoving the heavy manila envelope directly into Brian’s chest.

Brian instinctively caught it, his brow furrowing in confusion. "What is this? Is this a joke?"

Carol marched forward, her face turning bright red. "Listen here, officer! My family has donated heavily to this county! How dare you interrupt us—"

"Ma'am, step back!" the second deputy commanded, placing a hand on his belt. "This is a court order."

I stepped out of Sarah’s car and walked slowly up the gravel path toward them.

When Brian saw me, his face drained of all color. "Rachel? What... what are you doing here?"

"Taking my children home," I said coldly.

Noah immediately pulled his wrist out of Brian’s grip and ran toward me, dragging Emma by the hand. "Mom!"

I pulled both of my children behind me, wrapping my arms around them.

"Rachel, have you lost your mind?!" Carol shrieked, her voice echoing off the stone walls of the school. "Brian is their father! He has every right to enroll them here!"

"Not anymore," Sarah said, stepping forward with a certified court seal document. "As of 8:00 AM today, Rachel Moreland has been granted emergency sole legal and physical custody. Mr. Moreland’s custody rights have been temporarily revoked due to child endangerment, conspiracy, and emotional abuse."

Brian’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "Abuse?! That's insane! I was just getting them a good education!"

"We have the group chat logs, Brian," I said, stepping closer to him, my voice dripping with icy contempt. "Family Decisions. Step one was the haircut. Step two was St. Jude’s. Did you really think I wouldn't find out?"

Carol gasped, her head snapping toward her son. "You let her see the chat?!"

"I... I didn't!" Brian stammered, his eyes darting frantically between me, the police officers, and the legal papers in his hand. "Rachel, please... let's talk about this at home. We can fix this!"

"There is no 'home' with you anymore, Brian," I said. "You chose your mother over your daughter. Now you can live with her."

Deputy Miller stepped between Brian and my children. "Mr. Moreland, Mrs. Moreland, you are ordered to stay at least five hundred feet away from Rachel Moreland and her children. If you attempt to follow them or contact them, you will be arrested immediately."

Brenda began screaming at the deputies, threatening lawsuits, while Carol stood frozen in absolute shock, her carefully constructed world crumbling around her feet.

I looked Brian dead in the eye one last time. "Sign the divorce papers when my lawyer sends them tomorrow, Brian. Or I’ll make sure the video of what your mother did at Emma's birthday party goes viral."

Without waiting for a response, I turned my back on my husband, took my children by the hands, and walked away.
