CHAPTER 9: THE FINAL BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 9: THE FINAL BETRAYAL
The gun was pointed directly at me.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Not because I was afraid of the weapon.
But because of the person holding it.
Daniel.
My brother.
The man whose existence had been hidden from me.
The man who, a few days ago, was only a name on a leaked document.
Now he stood in front of me.
A stranger with my father’s eyes.
A stranger with my family’s blood.
A stranger holding a gun at my chest.
“Daniel.”
His hand tightened.
“Don’t.”
His voice was cold.
But his eyes were not.
There was pain there.
The same pain I had seen in Caroline’s eyes.
The pain of someone who spent years believing they were unwanted.
Richard stood beside him, smiling.
He looked satisfied.
Like he had finally arranged every piece on his chessboard.
“I knew this would happen,” Richard said.
I looked at him.
“You used him.”
Richard laughed softly.
“Used?”
He looked at Daniel.
“Is that what he told you?”
Daniel’s eyes moved slightly.
A small reaction.
Enough.
I understood.
Richard was manipulating both of us.
Just like he manipulated my father.
Just like he manipulated my mother.
“Daniel,” I said carefully.
“Don’t listen to him.”
His expression hardened.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do.”
“I know.”
I nodded.
“I know I don’t.”
The honesty surprised him.
For a second, the anger in his eyes weakened.
I continued.
“You have every reason to hate me.”
Richard looked annoyed.
“Don’t.”
I ignored him.
“Your whole life, you were hidden.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You had a family.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I looked at him.
“I had a lie.”
The words landed.
Because they were true.
“We were both lied to.”
Daniel stared at me.
Richard stepped forward.
“Enough.”
He looked at Daniel.
“Remember why you’re here.”
Daniel’s eyes changed.
Anger returned.
“You killed my mother.”
The sentence surprised me.
Richard smiled.
“She was a problem.”
My blood froze.
“What?”
Daniel looked at Richard.
“You promised she would be safe.”
Richard shrugged.
“She knew too much.”
The room went silent.
Daniel’s grip on the gun changed.
I saw it.
The doubt.
The realization.
Richard continued.
“Don’t pretend you’re different from him, Daniel.”
He pointed toward me.
“Your brother built an empire on stolen secrets.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Is it true?”
The question hurt.
Because I didn’t know how much truth I could even trust anymore.
“My father made mistakes.”
Richard laughed.
“Mistakes?”
He stepped closer.
“Your father destroyed Michael Carter.”
Daniel’s face became serious.
“Tell him.”
Richard smiled.
“Your father stole Michael’s company.”
He looked at me.
“He stole his designs.”
Then at Daniel.
“And when Michael tried to expose him…”
He paused.
“He disappeared.”
My heart raced.
“Where did he go?”
Richard looked at me.
“You still think everyone is dead, don’t you?”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?”
Richard smiled.
“Your father didn’t kill Michael.”
Silence.
“Your father protected him.”
I froze.
Protected him?
Richard continued.
“Because Michael discovered the truth.”
“What truth?”
His smile disappeared.
“The company was never about money.”
I stared.
“What?”
“It was about control.”
Richard walked slowly around us.
“Your father and Michael built Brooks Development together.”
My heart pounded.
“Then why erase him?”
“Because your father realized something.”
Richard looked at me.
“He realized I was stealing from them.”
The world went quiet.
Finally.
The truth.
“You betrayed them.”
Richard smiled.
“Yes.”
He didn’t even deny it.
“I took small amounts first.”
“Then larger ones.”
“Your father discovered it.”
My hands became fists.
“And you killed him.”
Richard’s expression changed.
For the first time, anger appeared.
“Your father was going to destroy everything I built.”
“So you murdered him.”
He looked at me.
“No.”
A pause.
“I gave him a choice.”
I froze.
“What?”
Richard laughed.
“He could expose me and lose everything.”
“Or stay silent and protect you.”
My heart stopped.
My father.
All those years.
The secrets.
The silence.
The lies.
He was protecting me.
Richard continued:
“Your father knew if the truth came out, you would become a target.”
He looked at Daniel.
“So he hid Michael.”
Then at me.
“And he hid you.”
I looked at Daniel.
The anger between us suddenly felt different.
Because we were not enemies.
We were both victims.
“Where is my mother?” I asked.
Richard smiled.
“Alive.”
Relief came.
Then disappeared.
“But not for long.”
My body went cold.
“What do you want?”
He looked at me.
“The company.”
I laughed bitterly.
“After everything?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
His answer was simple.
“Because your father chose you.”
That sentence revealed everything.
This was never about money.
It was about jealousy.
Richard wanted what my father gave me.
A family.
A legacy.
A place in someone’s heart.
And he destroyed everyone to get it.
Daniel lowered the gun slightly.
Richard noticed.
“Daniel.”
My brother looked at him.
“Do it.”
Silence.
Daniel looked at me.
I saw the conflict in his eyes.
He wanted revenge.
But he also wanted the truth.
And maybe…
He wanted a brother.
A sound came from behind us.
A voice.
“Nobody moves.”
Everyone froze.
Police.
But not just police.
My security team.
And Thomas.
He stepped into the building.
Richard’s face changed.
“You.”
Thomas looked at him.
“Yes.”
“You betrayed me?”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“I finally stopped betraying Nathan.”
Richard reached for something inside his coat.
A gun.
Everything happened at once.
A shot.
A scream.
Daniel moved.
I moved.
And Richard fell.
For a second, nobody spoke.
Then I heard Daniel.
“Are you okay?”
The question was directed at me.
Not himself.
Me.
My brother.
I looked at him.
And slowly nodded.
“Yeah.”
A strange smile appeared.
“Good.”
Then he looked away.
Like he didn’t know what to do next.
Neither did I.
Because we were brothers.
But we were strangers.
And we had no idea how to fix thirty years of separation.
Hours later, we found my mother.
Alive.
Weak.
But alive.
When she saw me, she started crying.
“I’m sorry.”
Those two words.
The same words everyone had said.
I stood there.
Thinking about everything.
Caroline.
The children.
My father.
Daniel.
The lies.
The pain.
Then I said:
“I believe you.”
She looked surprised.
“But I’m still hurt.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
And for the first time, that was enough.
Because healing was not pretending nothing happened.
Healing was accepting the truth.
The next morning, I went to the hospital.
Lucas opened his eyes.
The doctor said he was recovering.
I walked into the room slowly.
Caroline was sitting beside him.
She looked at me.
“How is your mother?”
“Alive.”
She nodded.
A quiet moment passed.
Then she asked:
“Did you find the truth?”
I looked at my son.
Then at her.
“Yes.”
“And?”
I smiled sadly.
“The truth was more complicated than the lie.”
For the first time, she didn’t look away.
She reached out.
Not to forgive me.
Not completely.
Just enough.
Her hand touched mine.
And I realized something.
I had spent my entire life building things.
Buildings.
Companies.
A reputation.
But the most important thing I would ever build…
May you like
Was trust.
And that would take time.
