Chapter 4 - The Fortress on the Hill

The Brooks family estate in Westchester was a sprawling, sixty-acre sanctuary of rolling lawns, ancient oak trees, and a grand stone manor that had belonged to my family for three generations. It was a place of absolute privacy, protected by state-of-the-art security gates and a staff that was loyal to the death.
As the convoy pulled up to the grand entrance, the massive iron gates swung open smoothly. The medical SUV stopped under the wide stone portico, where my father, Charles Brooks, was already waiting.
He didn't look like a retired contractor. He looked like the king of an empire.
At sixty-two, Charles Brooks still carried himself with a commanding, military precision. He wore a simple, dark cashmere sweater, but his eyes—sharp, piercing blue eyes—carried the weight of a man who had built a global dynasty from nothing. Beside him stood Dr. Evelyn Vance, our family’s private physician, and two pediatric nurses.
The moment the SUV door opened, my father stepped forward. He didn't say a word. He simply reached in, his strong, weathered hands gently supporting my back and legs as he lifted me out of the vehicle, bypassing the guards entirely.
"I’ve got you, sweetheart," he whispered against my hair, his voice thick with a rare, raw emotion. "You're safe now. Both of you."
I buried my face in his shoulder, a sob finally escaping my throat as the tension I had carried for two years began to dissolve. "Dad... I'm so sorry. I should have listened to you."
"Hush now," Charles said, carrying me into the warm, grand foyer of the manor, where a wheelchair stood ready. He placed me down gently, then immediately turned to the nurse holding Leo. He took his grandson into his arms, his eyes softening as he looked down at the tiny, sleeping face.
"He looks just like you did when you were a baby, Audrey," my father murmured, a proud, fierce smile touching his lips. "He has the Brooks eyes."
Dr. Vance immediately went to work, wheeling me into the ground-floor medical suite we had prepared. Within minutes, my incision was cleaned, redressed, and I was given a safe, high-grade pain management drip that immediately began to soothe the agonizing ache in my side. Leo was placed in a stunning, hand-carved mahogany crib beside my bed, surrounded by the best pediatric care money could buy.
An hour later, my father walked into the room, carrying a tablet. The soft glow of the screen illuminated a face that had returned to its usual, ruthless determination.
"How are you feeling, Audrey?" he asked, sitting in the leather chair beside my bed.
"The pain is gone," I said, looking at Leo, who was peacefully sleeping. "Thank you, Dad."
"Do not thank me. I should have stepped in sooner," Charles said, his voice dropping into a dark, dangerous register. "I allowed you to marry that boy because I believed you needed to learn your own lessons about the world. But I will not tolerate anyone, let alone a social-climbing parasite, treating my daughter like garbage."
"He shut down my bank accounts last month, Dad," I confessed, my voice quiet. "He said since I wasn't working, I didn't need independent access to funds. He made me ask his mother for grocery money."
My father’s jaw clenched so hard I could hear the joint pop. "He did what?"
"And the SUV... the one you gave me. He took the keys. He said it was too nice for a 'stay-at-the-home mom' and that he needed it to show the Vanguard investors he was successful."
Charles slowly rose from his chair, his eyes burning with a cold, white-hot fury that had laid waste to corporate rivals for forty years.
"Marcus!" my father called out.
The security chief stepped into the room instantly. "Yes, Mr. Brooks?"
"Call the police commissioner," Charles ordered. "Inform him that the black luxury SUV registered under my daughter’s name, license plate 7-BROOKS, has been stolen. I want it intercepted immediately. And Marcus?"
"Sir?"
"Ensure the driver is treated with the full dignity of a grand-larceny suspect."
May you like
"Understood, Mr. Brooks. It will be done within the hour."
My father turned back to me, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his face. "Your husband thinks he is about to become a tech titan, Audrey. Let’s show him what happens when you build a house of cards on land that belongs to the Brooks family."
