Chapter 4 - The Crumbling Empire

The news of Ethan Vance’s arrest inside his own boardroom broke the internet by afternoon. The video captured by the local press crew—showing the prestigious CEO screaming obscenities while being dragged out in handcuffs past his bruised, dignified wife—became the top trending story across every social media platform.

The public facade of Apex Development was shattered, but I didn't let the company die with his reputation. The very next day, I stepped into the CEO's office. I had the heavy mahogany desk removed and replaced with a simple, functional workspace.

"We have a liquidity crisis, Chloe," Arthur Vance, one of the remaining honest board members, said as he entered my office with a stack of bank notices. "The banks are freezing our commercial credit lines because of the criminal investigation into Ethan's embezzlement. If we can't show stability by Friday, the sub-contractors will walk off the downtown project."

"The banks are afraid of the name Vance, Arthur," I said, without looking up from my ledger. "They aren't afraid of the money. Call an emergency press conference for tomorrow morning. We are rebranding. Apex Development is now Sterling Meridian Construction. And we are going to fully cooperate with the federal investigators."

"And the missing pension funds?" he asked, worriedly.

"I’ve already traced them," I replied, showing him the tracking sequence on my monitor. "Ethan used a three-tier shell system through a bank in the Cayman Islands. He thought he was being clever, but he used a basic linear routing code. I’ve already contacted the international recovery unit. The funds will be restored to the employee accounts by Thursday afternoon."

Arthur stared at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of awe and relief. "Your husband really had no idea who he was living with, did he?"

"He didn't want a partner, Arthur. He wanted a possession," I said softly. "He forgot that possessions don't know how to count."

While the company was being rebuilt, the criminal case against Ethan was turning into a legal fortress. Liam had personally overseen the collection of evidence at the hospital. The forensic kit, the DNA matches under my fingernails from when I fought back, and the six months of encrypted text messages showing his progressive escalation of control were handed over to the district attorney.

Ethan’s high-priced lawyers tried everything. They tried to claim the evidence was obtained illegally. They tried to offer a plea deal that would give him probation. But the DA, backed by the public fury generated by the boardroom video, refused to budge. They wanted a maximum sentence for first-degree aggravated assault and corporate fraud.

One evening, Liam came by my new apartment—a small, bright space filled with plants and sunlight, completely free of the oppressive security locks Ethan had installed in our old house.

"His legal team called me today," Liam said, sitting on the kitchen counter while I made tea. "They wanted to know if you’d accept a civil settlement in exchange for dropping the personal testimony. They offered ten million."

I handed him a mug, a small, cold smile on my lips. "Tell them I’ll take the ten million after the judge reads the verdict. It’ll make a wonderful donation to the city’s women’s shelters. But as for my testimony? Tell Ethan I wouldn't miss it for the world."
