Chapter 6 - THE RECKONING

The fallout from the penthouse arrest was a media tsunami. For the next two weeks, every major news outlet, financial magazine, and social media platform was flooded with the details of the "Vance Family Empire Collapse."
Marcus and Samantha Cho had played their cards beautifully. The audio recording of Julian admitting to the fraud, coupled with the exhaustive financial audit I had provided, left the Vance defense team with absolutely zero room to maneuver. Within forty-eight hours of the arrest, the Durand Group officially pulled out of the multi-billion-dollar merger, releasing a public statement condemning the Vance Group’s leadership.
The Vance Group’s stock plummeted by 75% in a single trading session. The board of directors, desperate to save the company from complete liquidation, held an emergency meeting. They voted unanimously to strip Julian and Eleanor of all executive powers, freezing their personal assets to cover the billions in damages caused by Julian’s offshore embezzlement.
I watched the news from the comfort of Marcus's library, holding the real Leo in my arms. He was growing bigger every day, his cheeks turning rosy and healthy. For the first time in my life, I felt a deep, profound sense of peace. The ghost of my past had finally been exorcised.
A week later, the final court hearing for the custody and divorce settlement took place. Because the criminal charges against Julian were so severe, the family court judge threw out the previous fraudulent divorce terms.
I stood in the courtroom, dressed in a sharp, professional navy blue suit that Marcus had bought for me. Across the aisle sat Julian and Eleanor, wearing orange prison jumpsuits, handcuffed and shackled. Their legal team looked exhausted and defeated.
The judge slammed her gavel down, her voice echoing with authority.
"In light of the overwhelming evidence of corporate fraud, malicious slander, and attempted child coercion, this court hereby rules the original divorce settlement null and void. Vivian Thorne is granted full, uncompromised legal and physical custody of her son, Leo. Furthermore, due to the criminal asset dissipation committed by Julian Vance, the court orders a mandatory restructuring of the Vance Trust."
The judge looked at me, her expression softening into one of immense respect.
"Since the child, Leo, has been verified through independent court-ordered genetic testing to be the biological son of Julian Vance—satisfying the miracle recovery clause outlined by his late grandfather's original will—and since Julian Vance is legally unfit, the court hereby appoints Vivian Thorne as the sole, independent Trustee of the Vance Estate, valued at 1.2 billion dollars, to be held in trust for Leo Thorne until he reaches adulthood."

Eleanor let out a choked, strangled cry of despair, her head falling into her manicured hands. Julian stared at me, his eyes empty, realizing that the empire he had tried so desperately to steal by destroying me now belonged entirely to the son he had rejected.
I closed my eyes, letting out a long, slow breath. It was over. We had won.
