The car door closed with a sound so solid it felt like the world sealing shut behind her.
Clara didn’t realize she was holding her breath until the interior silence forced it out of her.
Warmth hit her first.
Not emotional warmth—physical. The kind of controlled climate only expensive, armored vehicles had. The rain outside turned instantly distant, reduced to a soft hiss against bulletproof glass.
Bulletproof.
Her mind latched onto the word too quickly.
She looked at Dominic Vale.
He was already watching her—but not in a way that felt invasive. More like he was waiting for her to notice something she should have seen earlier.
