Chapter 4 - The Net Swings Wide

The tension in our home grew palpable as Friday approached. Eleanor seemed unusually energetic, flitting around the house arranging dinner parties and discussing guest lists for upcoming autumn galas. To anyone else, she looked like a blissful, wealthy matriarch. To me, she looked like a vulture circling a dying animal.
On Thursday night, I sat in my study, intentionally leaving a bottle of my heart medication visible on the desk. I wanted to see how far she would go. I watched through a hidden nanny-cam I had installed in the bookshelf earlier that week.
At midnight, Eleanor slipped into my study while I was pretending to be asleep down the hall. She walked over to the desk, picked up the prescription bottle, and carefully substituted my standard pills with a different, identical-looking medication.
The next morning, I took the bottle to my car and handed it to Marcus's private investigator, who had it analyzed within two hours.
The call came back while I was parked down the street from the attorney's office. “It’s a high-dose beta-blocker mixed with a severe stimulant antagonist,” Marcus told me over the phone. “If you had taken those pills before your golf tournament in the hot sun, Richard, you would have suffered a massive, fatal cardiac arrest. It would have looked completely natural. A tragic medical emergency brought on by a weak heart.”
A cold sweat broke out over my skin. She wasn't just trying to steal my money. She was actively trying to execute me.
"Are the police ready?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.
"They are standing by," Marcus confirmed. "The district attorney himself signed off on the warrants based on the attempted murder forensics and the corporate fraud evidence. Preston is already on his way to the office under the guise of an urgent board meeting. He has no idea what he’s walking into, Richard. Be ready to hold him up. This is going to break him."
"I'll be there," I said, putting the car in drive.
At exactly 2:45 PM, I walked into the opulent, wood-paneled conference room of Henderson & Associates on the upper east side. Eleanor and Harper were already seated at the massive table, surrounded by stacks of legal documents. Eleanor’s personal attorney, a man who had clearly been bought and paid for, was adjusting his pen.
When the door opened and I walked in, followed by Marcus and three plainclothes detectives, the color drained instantly from Eleanor's face.
"Richard?" Eleanor gasped, her voice cracking before she quickly tried to put on her mask of confusion. "Darling, what are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be at the country club? And who are these people?"
Harper stood up, clutching her belly, her eyes wide with sudden terror as she spotted Marcus. "What’s going on?"
"Sit down, Eleanor," I said calmly, taking a seat at the opposite end of the table. I placed the encrypted flash drive from The Gilded Oak and the bottle of altered medication directly onto the polished wood. "The game is over."
Before she could speak, the side door opened, and Preston walked in, flanked by two more investigators. He looked bewildered, his eyes darting from me to his mother, and then to his wife. "Dad? Mom? What is this? Why did your office call me saying there was an emergency asset freeze?"
"Preston, honey, come here," Harper cried out, instantly tears streaming down her face in an Oscar-worthy performance. "Your father is having some sort of medical episode! He’s brought police into our attorney’s office! He’s ruining everything!"
Preston rushed forward, but Marcus stepped between them, gently placing a hand on my son's shoulder. "Preston, I need you to sit down and listen very carefully to what we are about to play. Your father is perfectly fine. But your life is about to change."
Marcus turned on the room's large presentation monitor and hit play on the presentation file.
The room fell into a deathly, suffocating silence as the security footage from The Gilded Oak filled the screen. Eleanor's cold, calculating voice echoed through the high-end law office, detailing the plot to drain the estate, the bribery of the clinic director, and her absolute contempt for her own son's intelligence.
"No..." Preston whispered, his face turning completely white as he watched his mother mock him on screen. "No, that’s... that’s a fake. That’s AI. Mom, tell me that’s not real!"
Eleanor sat frozen, her lips pressed into a thin, bloodless line. She didn't look at Preston. She didn't look at me. Her brilliant, scheming mind was clearly realizing that every single exit route had been completely blocked.
But we weren't done. Marcus advanced the presentation, displaying the financial logs of E.H. Holdings, the signed confession from the St. Jude's medical director, and finally, the hundreds of romantic text messages between Harper and Caleb Cross.
"And finally," I said, looking directly at the sobbing girl in the Vera Wang maternity dress. "The baby you are carrying does not belong to my son. It belongs to Caleb Cross. We have the DNA profile and the original clinic records right here."
May you like
Preston staggered backward, hitting the wall. He looked at Harper, his eyes filled with a level of betrayal that no human being should ever have to experience. "You... you lied to me? About the baby? About everything?"
Harper dropped her face into her hands, her sweet demeanor completely dissolving into harsh, ugly sobs. She didn't deny it. The evidence was absolute.
