Chapter 3 - Setting the Trap

The next morning, the Sterling estate was in complete chaos. The digital blackout had been lifted after twelve hours, but the psychological damage was done. Eleanor and Jason were frantic. My pickup truck had left deep, ugly scars across their multi-million-dollar lawn, a physical manifestation of the vulnerability they had suddenly felt.

Jason sat in the grand living room, a bag of frozen peas pressed against his bruised abdomen, while Eleanor paced back and forth, screaming into her phone at her husband’s high-priced corporate defense attorneys.

"What do you mean we can't find him?!" Eleanor yelled, her face contorted in rage. "He’s an old gardener! He lives in a trailer on the outskirts of the county! I want him arrested for assault, I want him in chains, and I want that little bitch Sarah dragged back here to sign the papers before the gala tonight!"

"Mrs. Sterling," the attorney's voice trembled over the speakerphone. "We ran the name John Miller through the state database. Nothing came up except a standard gardener's license and a small piece of agricultural land. But when our private investigators tried to pull his tax history or his military records... the system completely locked us out. We received an automated red flag from the Department of Defense. Whoever your daughter-in-law's father is... he doesn't officially exist."

Eleanor dropped the phone onto the velvet sofa, her heart skipping a beat. She remembered the quiet, terrifying authority in my voice when I told her I had taken down men on three different continents. For the first time in her privileged life, a cold finger of dread traced its way down her spine.

"Mom," Jason groaned, his voice weak. "He’s just an old man. He got a lucky shot in. We have twenty armed private security guards for the gala tonight. If he shows his face, our guys will put a bullet in him."

"Shut up, Jason!" Eleanor snapped, her nerves frayed. "We need to focus on the gala. Your father’s political future depends on tonight. If Sarah isn't there, people will ask questions. We will tell everyone she fell ill with a sudden fever. Once the gala is over and your father secures the nomination, we will use the full weight of the state police to crush that old man."

Meanwhile, back at the secure clinic, Sarah woke up. The color had returned to her face, and her fever had completely broken. She sat up in bed, looking at her jagged, short hair in a small mirror I had placed on the nightstand. Tears filled her eyes, but when she saw me sitting in the corner, cleaning my old service sidearm, her expression hardened.

"Dad," she whispered. "I thought I was going to die in that room. They treated me like an animal."

I walked over, sitting on the edge of her bed, taking her small hand in mine. "I know, sweetheart. And I promise you, they will pay for every single tear you shed, and every single strand of hair they took from you. You found the dual-ledgers, right?"

"Yes," Sarah said, her legal mind switching back on. "I copied the decrypted files onto a secure cloud server before they took my laptop. The password is memorized. It contains thirty years of international wire transfers, bribed judges, and illicit shipping manifests. It’s enough to dismantle the entire Sterling empire permanently."

"Good," I smiled, kissing her forehead. "Put on your best dress, Sarah. Tonight, you and I are going to a party."

By 6:00 PM, the grand ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel was packed with the city's high society. Crystal chandeliers gleamed, champagne flowed like water, and Charles Sterling—a tall, arrogant man with a perfect silver mane—stood at the center of the room, shaking hands with governors and senators. Eleanor stood by his side, dripping in diamonds, her smile radiant, though her eyes darted nervously toward the entrance every time the doors opened.

They thought they were safe surrounded by their wealth, their security guards, and their powerful friends. They had no idea that the entire staff of the hotel—the waiters, the bartenders, the valets—had been replaced two hours ago by elite undercover operators from Quantico. The net was fully cast. Now, it was time to pull the strings.
