Chapter 9

The Woman Who Survived Claire had not died in the river. She had escaped it. Barely. A fisherman found her downstream with a broken skull and no memory. For years, she lived under another name in a care facility in Wisconsin. No family. No past. No idea who she had been. Then, after a fall in the facility, her memory returned in pieces. Mark. The necklace. The lake house. The night he drove her car toward the bridge while she begged him to stop. Evelyn sobbed when Claire took the stand. Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just one broken sound. A mother hearing her dead child breathe. Claire looked at the jury. Then at me. “I thought I was the only one,” she said. Her voice shook. “But men like him do not stop because they are forgiven. They stop when someone finally survives loudly enough.” Mark shouted then. Called her a liar. Called me insane. Called Evelyn obsessed. But no one was listening anymore. Because the dead woman had walked into court. And she remembered everything.
