Chapter 4 - The Backlash

The next two weeks were a whirlwind of legal battles and public media storms.
As Daniel had promised, Vivian was arrested the morning after the wedding. The local news stations picked up the story immediately: “Prominent Event Planner Arrested for Corporate Fraud and Forgery Against Burn-Survivor Niece.” The irony was too perfect for the media to ignore, and public opinion slammed heavily against Vivian and Clara.
However, Vivian wasn't entirely powerless. She used her one phone call to contact a tabloid journalist she had known for years, spinning a completely fabricated narrative.
A week after the wedding, a massive article dropped online with the headline: “Gold-Digging Niece Uses Billionaire Husband to Destroy the Family That Raised Her.” The article featured heavily edited photos of me, exaggerating my scars to make me look sinister, and quoted "anonymous family sources" claiming that I had intentionally set the warehouse fire myself to frame my aunt and trap Daniel into a marriage out of guilt.
I sat at the kitchen island of Daniel’s penthouse, staring at the tablet screen, my blood running cold. The comments sections were brutal. People who knew nothing about the truth were calling me a monster, a manipulator, and a fraud.
"Don't look at it, Elena," Daniel said, walking into the kitchen and gently taking the tablet from my hands. He placed a warm cup of tea in front of me and leaned down to press his forehead against mine. "It’s a dying gasp from a desperate woman. Our legal team is already filing a massive defamation lawsuit against the tabloid and Vivian."
"It's not the tabloid I'm worried about, Daniel," I admitted, my voice trembling slightly. "It's Clara. She’s been posting live videos all week, crying to her followers about how they're being evicted, how they're homeless because of us. People are starting to believe her. They’re protesting outside the Cross Industries headquarters."
"Let them protest," Daniel said firmly. "The truth is a stubborn thing, sweetheart. It doesn't wash away with tears or internet lies. We have the fire department reports. We have the official safety code violations that Vivian ignored for five years. We are going to release everything."
Suddenly, Daniel’s phone rang. He looked at the caller ID; it was the head of security for the penthouse building.
"Mr. Cross," the security guard’s voice sounded urgent over the speaker. "We have a situation in the lobby. Clara is here, and she’s not alone. She brought a camera crew from a major news network. She’s demanding to see Mrs. Cross, claiming she has an apology to make, but it looks like a media ambush. Should we have them removed?"

I looked at Daniel, and before he could tell the guard to throw them out, I placed my hand over his.
"No," I said, my eyes turning sharp. "Tell them to let her up. If she wants a show, let's give her the finale."
