Chapter 2 - The Giant Awakes

The silence that descended upon the marble foyer of the Rivas mansion was absolute. The heavy oak doors, which had stood as the gates of my golden cage for two years, now framed the towering, unmistakable figure of Ricardo Salazar.

My father did not look like a man who had rushed. His tailored dark navy suit was immaculate, his silver-streaked hair perfectly styled, and his posture radiated the quiet, terrifying authority of a man who ruled an empire. Behind him, four broad-shouldered men in dark suits stood in a silent, impenetrable semi-circle, their eyes scanning the room with professional coldness.

Santiago’s hand, which had been raised to strike me, froze mid-air. The arrogant sneer on his face dissolved into a comical mask of confusion, then rapidly drained of color.

"Mr... Mr. Salazar?" Santiago stammered, his arm slowly dropping to his side. He instinctively took a step back, his polished leather shoes squeaking against the marble floor. "What... what are you doing here? This is my private residence. There must be some mistake."

"The only mistake made in this house," Ricardo Salazar said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that seemed to shake the crystal chandelier above, "was your belief that my daughter was alone."

My father’s eyes finally shifted from Santiago to me. The icy fury in his gaze instantly melted into a profound, aching warmth. He stepped forward, completely ignoring Santiago as if he were nothing but dust on the floor. He dropped to one knee beside me, his strong hands gently taking my trembling shoulders.

"Valeria," he whispered, using the name I had lived under, though his eyes spoke the truth of my birth. "My sweet girl. I am here. You don't have to be brave anymore."

A single, hot tear escaped my eye, spilling onto his hand. "Father," I choked out, my voice cracking under the weight of two years of suppressed terror. "The baby... we have to protect the baby."

"Nothing will touch him. I swear it on your mother’s memory," my father said softly. He took off his cashmere overcoat and wrapped it around my shivering shoulders, shielding my eight-month-pregnant belly from the toxic air of the room.

From the staircase, the sharp click of heels broke the silence. Beatriz Rivas, Santiago’s mother, was slowly descending, her wine glass still clutched in her hand. Her eyes were wide with shock, but her socialite training quickly took over. She forced a tight, artificial smile onto her face.

"Mr. Salazar," Beatriz said, her voice dripping with calculated sweetness. "This is quite a surprise. We had no idea our dear Valeria was related to you. If we had known—"

"If you had known," my father interrupted, standing up to his full height and turning to face her, "you would have pretended to be human beings instead of the monsters you are. But your ignorance has shown me your true nature. And for that, I am almost grateful."

"Now see here!" Santiago tried to find his courage, stepping forward and puffing out his chest. "Valeria is my wife! She signed a marriage contract. She belongs to the Rivas family. You cannot just march into my home and—"

"Your wife?" Ricardo Salazar laughed, a cold, humorless sound that made Beatriz flinch. "You married Valeria Mendoza. An orphan with no registry, no background, and no assets. A identity I personally created to protect her from the vultures of our world. You did not marry Valeria Salazar. The legal paperwork you hold is worthless, Santiago. But the evidence we hold? That is priceless."

My father reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek black smartphone. He pressed a button, and the voice of Santiago filled the room, playing directly from the antique silver clock’s hidden stream.

"...your baby is going to grow up without a mother... You're nothing without me... You own nothing... You'll do exactly what I tell you..."

Then, Beatriz’s voice played, cold and lazy.

"...Don't leave bruises anyone can photograph... Tomorrow, you'll sign. You'll disappear..."

Beatriz’s glass of red wine slipped from her fingers, shattering on the white marble. The dark red liquid pooled around her shoes like blood.

"My attorney has already filed the emergency protective order," my father said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "By tomorrow morning, the financial boards of every bank holding Rivas Group debt will receive a copy of this recording, alongside the forensic audit of your offshore accounts. You wanted to lock my daughter in a psychiatric clinic, Santiago? I suggest you prepare yourself for a much smaller cell."

My father turned back to me, bending down to lift me carefully into his arms. I clung to his neck, my face buried in his shoulder, feeling the solid, unbreakable safety of his presence.

"Let's go home, Valeria," he whispered.

As my father carried me out of the mansion, Santiago screamed behind us, his voice cracking with a desperate, pathetic panic. "Salazar! We can talk about this! There’s a merger! We have a contract!"

But the heavy oak doors shut behind us, silencing his cries, and the cool night air of Mexico City welcomed me back to life.
