Chapter 1 - The Three Bombs

The kitchen clock ticked with agonizing precision. Blood soaked through the floral pattern of my Sunday blouse, warm and sticky, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the icy clarity that washed over me.

Vanessa’s smirk was still plastered across her face, heavy with the arrogance of a predator who believed her prey was completely cornered. She casually tossed a loose shard of my broken porcelain plate into the trash can.

"Well, Eleanor?" Vanessa asked, tapping her manicured nails on the mahogany table where the deed transfer documents lay. "Are we going to sign these nicely, or do Daniel and I need to call the county hospital to report a sudden, severe episode of geriatric confusion? Because looking at you right now, bleeding and stubborn, I think the state would agree you're a danger to yourself."

I didn't answer right away. I looked at Daniel. My only son. The boy I had stayed up with through fevers, the man whose college tuition his father and I had paid by working double shifts. He was staring at the geometric patterns on the linoleum floor, his hands shoved deep into his pockets.

"Daniel," I said, my voice remarkably steady despite the ringing in my ears. "Look at me."

"Mom, just do it," he muttered, his voice cracking but devoid of any real remorse. "Vanessa's company just needs a bridge loan. Once the summer gala season hits, she’ll make millions. We’ll pay off the bank, remove the collateral on the house, and everything goes back to normal. You’re just... you’re making this harder than it needs to be."

"Normal?" I whispered, letting out a soft, dry laugh that made Vanessa’s eyes narrow. "You call forging my signature normal, Daniel? You call falsifying medical documents from Dr. Harrison’s office normal?"

Daniel’s head snapped up, his face losing whatever little color it had left. "How... how did you—"

"Shut up, Daniel!" Vanessa snapped, stepping between us, her silk trousers rustling. She glared at me, her corporate facade slipping to reveal the ruthless social climber beneath. "It doesn't matter what you think you found, Eleanor. Your mind is failing. Who is a judge going to believe? A successful luxury events coordinator and her loving husband, or a lonely, grieving widow who can't even remember where she puts her car keys?"

"You shifted my keys to the hallway basket when I wasn't looking, Vanessa," I said, lowering the towel slightly. The bleeding had slowed, but the crimson stain on my collar was a permanent monument to her violence. "And you dismissed Maria, my housekeeper of twelve years, because she caught you practicing my signature on the kitchen island. You thought I didn't notice. But a house is very quiet when people think you're invisible."

Vanessa sneered, pulling a heavy Montblanc pen from her designer handbag and slamming it onto the deed papers. "Sign. Right now. I am done playing games with a senile old woman."

"I am done playing games too," I agreed gently. I reached into my apron pocket and pulled out my smartphone. I didn't unlock it to call for help. I didn't need to. I simply unlocked the screen to show them the active recording app. It had been running since the moment they walked into the kitchen after brunch.

Vanessa lunged for the phone, her acrylic nails clawing at my hand, but I stepped back with an agility that caught her completely off guard.

"If you touch me again, Vanessa, the battery on this phone won't be the only thing that dies today," I warned, my voice dropping an octave, possessing the authoritative weight of a woman who had run a successful manufacturing business alongside her husband for forty years before retiring.

Before Vanessa could scream at Daniel to grab the device, a sharp, authoritative knock echoed from the front door. Not a polite visitor's rap, but the heavy, rhythmic thud of law enforcement.

Vanessa froze. Daniel gasped.

"That will be the first of my phone calls," I said, pulling a fresh, clean napkin from the drawer to clean my face. "Let's go greet our guests, shall we?"
