Chapter 4 - The Eviction of the King

Jasper leaped out of the cab before it had even come to a complete stop, Priscilla and Gillian scrambling behind him. He ran past the doorman, who looked at him not with his usual deferential smile, but with a cold, mocking pity.
"Mr. Montgomery," the doorman said, stepping in front of the elevator. "I'm afraid I can't let you up."
"What do you mean you can't let me up?!" Jasper shouted, his eyes bloodshot. "I live here! Penthouse B!"
"Not anymore, sir," the doorman replied, pulling out a clipboard. "The lease for Penthouse B was held by Robertson Real Estate. The tenant of record, Mrs. Hailey Robertson, has officially terminated the lease. The landlords have requested immediate vacant possession. Any personal belongings not registered under Mrs. Robertson's name are currently being moved to a public storage facility in Queens."
"No! That's my furniture! My designer suits! My laptops!" Jasper screamed, trying to push past the doorman.
Two large, burly building security guards stepped out of the back office, their hands resting on their utility belts. Jasper froze, his chest heaving.
"I suggest you leave quietly, Mr. Montgomery," the doorman said. "Otherwise, we will have to escort you off the premises."
"Jasper!" Priscilla wailed, clutching her expensive handbag to her chest. "They're throwing us out! Where are we supposed to sleep tonight?! My flight back to Chicago isn't until tomorrow!"
"We'll go to a hotel," Jasper muttered, his brain working overtime to find a solution. "A five-star hotel. We’ll check into the Plaza. I still have my corporate credit cards."
He pulled out his wallet, grabbed his platinum business card, and booked a luxury suite online. The reservation went through, bringing a brief sigh of relief to his lips. They took another cab to the Plaza Hotel, their pride severely battered but their determination to maintain appearances still burning.
But when they reached the front desk of the legendary hotel, the receptionist’s smile quickly vanished as she swiped Jasper's card.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Montgomery," the receptionist said politely. "This card has been declined."
"Try it again!" Jasper snapped. "There’s a fifty-thousand-dollar limit on that card!"
"I did try it, sir. It says 'Account Closed by Issuer.' Do you have another form of payment?"
Jasper pulled out his personal credit card. Declined.
He pulled out his debit card. Insufficient Funds.
Cold sweat broke out on his forehead. He logged into his mobile banking app, only to find his account balance sitting at a dismal $12.43. A temporary freeze had been placed on all his assets, pending a forensic audit requested by the majority investors of his company.
"Sir?" the receptionist asked, her voice losing its warmth. "We will need a valid credit card to secure the room."
"Jasper..." Gillian whispered, her voice cracking. "What is happening? Why are your cards declined?"
"Because he's a fraud," a cold, sharp voice said from behind them.
They spun around to see Marcus Sterling standing in the lobby. The veteran federal financial investigator, who had recently joined Robertson Global’s legal task force, looked at Jasper with a expression of pure disdain.
"Jasper Montgomery," Marcus said, stepping forward. "I am here on behalf of Finnley Robertson. I believe you’re familiar with the concept of a pre-nuptial agreement?"
Jasper swallowed hard. "Yes. We signed one. But it said—"
"It said that in the event of a divorce, Hailey retains all assets brought into the marriage, including the apartment lease, the SUV, and any investments made by her family," Marcus interrupted. "It also contains a very strict 'moral turpitude' clause. If either party commits an act of gross emotional or physical negligence against the other, the non-offending party is entitled to immediate full custody of any children, with zero spousal support, and a complete freeze on any joint business ventures."
Marcus stepped closer, tapping his clipboard against Jasper’s chest. "Leaving a woman who just had major surgery on a public street with a newborn baby, while you joyride in her father’s car, fits the definition of gross negligence perfectly. The courts have already granted an emergency injunction. Your assets are frozen. Your company's intellectual property has been seized to cover the debts of the pulled funding. You are, legally and financially, bankrupt."
Priscilla let out a loud, dramatic sob and collapsed onto one of the lobby’s velvet sofas. Gillian looked as though she was going to throw up.

Jasper stared at Marcus, his world completely shattered. "Where is she?" he whispered. "Where is Hailey?"
"Where you can never touch her again," Marcus said. "Now, I suggest you and your family find a nice, cheap motel. If you can afford one."
