Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at Dawn

Claire froze, her hand still holding her car keys. The smug smile on her face vanished, replaced by a quick flicker of panic before she quickly masked it with an expression of sweet, innocent surprise.

"Ethan! Oh my gosh, darling, you scared me!" she gasped, placing a hand over her heart. "What are you doing home? I thought your emergency training didn't end until Sunday evening."

"It ended early," I said, my voice as cold and flat as a winter stone.

Claire chuckled nervously, taking off her sunglasses. "Well, that's wonderful! I just ran out to get some... early morning groceries. I wanted to surprise you and the kids with breakfast."

"Really?" I asked, taking a step forward. Rex let out a low, vibrating growl from the back of his throat. Claire flinched, stepping back toward the open door. "Because my security system says you checked into the Whispering Pines Resort yesterday at 10:00 AM. And your car GPS says you haven't been near a grocery store."

Claire’s face went pale. She swallowed hard, her eyes darting around the foyer. "Ethan... I can explain. I was just so stressed. The baby was crying constantly, and Valerie was being so difficult. I just needed a little break. I hired a babysitter! Yes, a wonderful girl from down the street. She must have left early."

"Stop lying, Claire," I said.

I pulled out my tablet and pressed play.

The audio of her voice filled the hallway. “Listen to me, you little brat... I’m not spending my Friday changing diapers... If you call your father, I will tell him you stole my jewelry...”

Claire stared at the screen, her mouth hanging open. The absolute proof of her cruelty was playing right in front of her, in high-definition. She looked like a cornered animal, her eyes wide with terror as she realized her sweet, innocent persona was gone forever.

"Ethan, please," she whimpered, reaching out to touch my arm. "I was just frustrated! You don't know how hard it is to stay home with two kids while you're away! I didn't mean those things. Valerie is fine! She’s a strong girl."

"She has a bruised shoulder and a severely strained back because she had to carry a twenty-pound baby for eight hours while you were getting a massage," I said, my voice rising just a fraction, filled with a quiet, terrifying authority. "She was on her knees scrubbing spoiled milk off the floor because she was terrified you would make her sleep in the laundry room again."

"I was just trying to teach her discipline!" Claire screamed, her facade completely breaking down. Her face twisted into an ugly, arrogant sneer. "She’s not my daughter, Ethan! Why should I waste my youth raising another woman's kid while you're off playing soldier? You should be grateful I even stayed in this boring house!"

"You won't be staying here anymore," a voice said from the living room.

Marcus Vance stepped into the hallway, holding a thick stack of legal documents. Behind him stood two uniform sheriff’s deputies.

"Claire Montgomery-Ward," Marcus said, handing her the papers. "You are hereby served with an emergency restraining order. You are required to vacate these premises immediately. You are permitted to take one suitcase of personal clothing, under the supervision of these officers. Any attempt to contact Ethan, Valerie, or Mateo will result in your immediate arrest."

"You can't do this!" Claire shrieked, throwing the papers at Marcus’s face. "My father will destroy you, Ethan! He bought you that SUV! He has partners on the town board!"

"Your father’s assets are currently being reviewed by the state attorney general's office," one of the deputies said, stepping forward and placing a heavy hand on her shoulder. "Ma'am, please step into the house, pack your suitcase, and leave quietly. Do not make us use handcuffs in front of the neighbors."
