CHAPTER 1: The Golden Cage

CHAPTER 1: The Golden Cage

The heavy oak doors of the Whitmore Estate didn't just shut; they sealed like a tomb. The click of the electronic locks echoed through the grand ballroom, instantly cutting off the murmurs of Chicago’s high society.

Vincent Moretti didn't break eye contact with me. His grip on my wrist was warm now, a stark contrast to the deathly pale skin I had noticed just minutes ago. His gray eyes searched my face, scanning for a tell, a lie, or a hidden weapon. Finding nothing but raw, trembling terror, his grip softened slightly, though he didn't let go.

"Elena," Vincent commanded, his voice growing stronger with every breath he drew. "Take the guests to the west wing. Separate the family from the staff. Nobody uses a phone. If a single signal leaves this house, I’ll hold the security team personally responsible."

"Vincent, look at yourself," Elena stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the marble. Her beautiful face was a mask of sisterly concern, but I caught the slight tremor in her hands. "You were poisoned. The doctor pronounced you dead three hours ago. You need a hospital, not an interrogation room."

"I am exactly where I need to be," Vincent growled. He turned his attention back to the silver-haired man with the red carnation. "Uncle Raymond. You look disappointed. Did you already start dividing up my real estate portfolio?"

Raymond Moretti forced a tight, diplomatic smile. "Don't be ridiculous, nephew. We are overjoyed. But the girl—" he pointed a finger at me, his eyes gleaming with a dangerous light. "She was suspiciously close to the casket. How did a south-side waitress notice a breath that professional medical equipment missed? She’s a plant. An assassin sent to finish the job."

My heart leaped into my throat. "No! I swear, I was just fixing the flowers! I didn't do anything!"

"Quiet," Vincent silenced the room with a single word. He looked down at me, his gaze heavy. "She stays with me. If she’s an assassin, she’s a terrible one—she just ruined the perfect murder."

Before I could protest, Vincent began to walk, dragging me along with him. His steps were slightly unsteady, but the sheer aura of authority he radiated made the armed guards scramble to clear a path. He led me out of the ballroom, down a long, dimly lit corridor lined with Renaissance paintings, and into a massive mahogany-paneled study.

The doors slammed shut behind us, cutting off the noise of the chaotic estate.

Vincent finally released my wrist. I stumbled back, rubbing my skin. I wanted to run, to find a window, to crawl back to my tiny apartment and pretend I was still just Grace Holloway, the girl who worried about rent.

"Sit," Vincent ordered, gesturing to a leather armchair. He walked over to a crystal decanter, poured himself two fingers of amber liquid, and drank it in one swallow. The alcohol seemed to bring the color back to his cheeks.

"I need to go home," I whispered, my voice cracking. "My shift is over. Marlene will—"

"Marlene is currently being questioned by my men," Vincent interrupted, leaning against his desk and crossing his arms. "And you aren't going anywhere, Grace. Whoever put me in that casket knows that you ruined their plan. The moment you step outside those gates, you are a dead woman."

"Why?" I cried, tears finally stinging my eyes. "I saved you! Why would they hurt me?"

"Because in my world, a witness is just a liability wrapped in skin," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly register. "You saw something. You noticed the poison wearing off before they did. To my enemies, you aren't a hero. You're the wild card that broke their game."

May you like

He walked over to me, towering over the chair. The scent of cedar and rich tobacco enveloped me. He reached out, his long fingers gently catching a tear that slipped down my cheek. The tenderness of the gesture was terrifying.

"You’re safe here," he murmured, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made it hard to breathe. "But from this moment on, your old life is gone. You belong to the Moretti house now."
