Chapter 5 - The Verdict and the Collapse

When the jury returned, the courtroom was so quiet you could hear the soft hum of the air conditioners.

“On the charge of attempted murder in the first degree,” the jury foreman announced, “we find the defendant, Vivian Mercer, guilty.”

Vivian collapsed back into her chair, letting out a horrific, wailing shriek.

“On the charge of accessory to attempted murder, grand larceny, and corporate fraud,” the foreman continued, “we find the defendant, Daniel Mercer, guilty.”

Daniel slumped forward, pressing his forehead against the defense table as tears streamed down his face.

Judge Cole slammed her gavel down to quiet the courtroom before delivering the sentences.

“Vivian Mercer,” Judge Cole said, her voice dripping with disdain. “Your actions were calculated, cruel, and devoid of basic human empathy. You used violence to assert dominance over a woman who opened her home to you. I sentence you to twenty-five years in state prison without the possibility of parole.”

Vivian screamed, flailing as bailiffs grabbed her arms and dragged her through the holding doors.

“Daniel Mercer,” Judge Cole turned to my ex-husband. “You acted as a predator in your own home. You exploited your wife’s trust, attempted to steal her family legacy, and stood by while she was subjected to unspeakable violence. I sentence you to eighteen years in state prison, alongside full financial restitution to the Sterling Trust in the amount of $6.2 million.”

As the guards pulled Daniel up from his chair, he looked back at me one last time, his mouth trembling. “Clara... please... save me...”

I didn't utter a word. I simply picked up my leather folder, stood up, and walked out of the courtroom into the blinding light of the afternoon sun.
