Chapter 3: The Unraveling of the Crown

The frantic wail of sirens cut through the crisp Virginia night as the ambulance sped away from Hawthorne Manor, leaving behind a reception that had transformed from a fairy-tale wedding into a crime scene.

Inside the bridal suite, the air was toxic with tension. The music had been turned off. The guests had been asked to leave the southern wing, but the core members of the family—Caleb, a weeping Lucinda, a stunned Adrian Moss, and a visibly shaking Eleanor—remained in the grand parlor, waiting for the police.

"How could you do it, Mom?" Caleb’s voice was dangerously quiet. He stood in the center of the room, his hands covered in my dried blood, staring at his mother as if she were a monster. "She was in labor. Your grandchild was in danger. You locked her in a bathroom?"

"Caleb, listen to me," Eleanor pleaded, her hands trembling as she reached toward him. For the first time in her life, her silver-blonde hair was messy, and her voice lacked its icy authority. "Mara was hysterical. She was exaggerating her symptoms just like she always does. I didn't lock the door—it must have caught on the molding when I shut it to give her privacy!"

"Stop lying!" Julian Moss, Adrian’s father and the primary investor in the Vale family's offshore real estate holdings, stepped forward. His face was a mask of pure corporate fury. "Dr. Vance explicitly stated the deadbolt was turned manually. And what about this, Eleanor?"

Julian slammed Eleanor’s designer clutch onto the table. It flew open, and my gold iPhone tumbled out onto the wood. It was switched completely off.

"Explain that," Julian demanded. "You stole a laboring woman's phone so she couldn't call 911. My family’s name is tied to this wedding, Eleanor. If that girl or that baby dies, the Moss family will be dragged through a federal PR nightmare. Your selfishness has ruined us!"

"I did it for Lucinda!" Eleanor finally snapped, her aristocratic mask cracking completely to reveal the ugly, desperate narcissism underneath. She turned to her daughter, eyes wild. "Lucinda, tell them! I did it for your perfect day! Mara has been trying to overshadow you since the day she married Caleb! If she had caused a scene before the processional, the press would have been talking about the Vale family's emergency, not your dress! Not your wedding!"

Lucinda stumbled back, looking at her mother with utter horror. The tears ruined her expensive makeup, leaving dark streaks down her face. "Mom... I wanted a beautiful wedding, but I didn't want you to kill my niece! If Mara dies... if the baby dies... I will never forgive you. My marriage is starting on the blood of my brother's family!"

Before Eleanor could respond, the heavy double doors of the parlor opened. Two Richmond police detectives walked in, their expressions grim.

"Eleanor Vale?" the lead detective asked, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.

"What is the meaning of this?" Eleanor gasped, stepping back toward the fireplace. "You can't arrest me! Do you know who my family is? We own half the commercial real estate in this district!"

"We don't care about your real estate, ma'am," the detective replied coldly. "We just received an update from the hospital. Mara Ellery is in critical condition, and the baby is undergoing emergency surgery due to prolonged fetal distress caused by delayed medical attention. You are under arrest for aggravated assault, unlawful confinement, and reckless endangerment of a minor."

"Caleb! Do something!" Eleanor screamed as the detective grabbed her arms, forcing them behind her back. The steel handcuffs clicked loudly—the exact same sound as the bathroom lock she had turned on me hours earlier. "I am your mother! You can't let them do this to me!"

Caleb didn't move a single muscle to help her. He stood like stone, watching as his mother was dragged out of the grand manor in her navy silk dress, past the whispering catering staff and the flashing lights of the police cruisers.

"I don't have a mother anymore," Caleb whispered to the empty room. He turned to Adrian and Julian Moss. "I'm going to the hospital. If my wife or daughter doesn't make it... I will personally ensure Eleanor never sees the light of day again."

As Caleb rushed out to his car, Julian Moss turned to his son, Adrian. "Call our corporate attorneys immediately. We need to sever all financial ties with Vale Holdings before the stock market opens on Monday. Eleanor Vale is radioactive. By morning, the Vale empire will be nothing but ash."
