Part 3: The Conspiracy Audit

By 5:00 p.m. that afternoon, the regulatory pressure against the Mercer family line had intensified into a total lockdown.
Daniel’s defense lawyers had tried twice to post an emergency bail bond using the equity from our shared suburban estate.
But they arrived at the district clerk’s window only to find that the property deed had been frozen under a state tax lien.
I sat behind my mahogany desk, reviewing the updated traffic analysis files Detective Ruiz had forwarded to my secure server.
The intersection footage from the night of the crash was displayed on the grand screen in a high-definition looping sequence.
It didn't show a sudden mechanical failure or a simple patch of black ice on a wet autumn highway.
It showed a dark commercial delivery vehicle owned by a sub-contractor of Mercer Logistics slowing down at the intersection.
And right behind our children’s transport car came a silver luxury sedan registered directly to Vanessa Cole.
"She wasn't at the office when the accident occurred, Harper," Detective Ruiz said over the secure speaker line.
"The tollway transponder logs prove she was tracking the twins' vehicle from the moment they left the babysitter's house."
"She used her secondary cellular line to coordinate the delivery truck’s sudden deceleration at the blind curve."
The evidence box Evelyn had carried into the chapel contained the physical brake line mechanism from the transport car.
A mechanical forensic screen completed at 2:00 a.m. proved the secondary hydraulic valve had been manually adjusted.
It was an intentional, calculated execution designed to look like a tragic weather-related incident to secure the payout.
"They needed the four-million-dollar insurance settlement to satisfy a massive deficit in their Boston development project," I murmured.
"Daniel had over-extended the firm's credit lines by three hundred percent to buy Vanessa her luxury high-rise condo."
"He treated my daughters' lives like a disposable liquid security to balance his corporate ledger," I added, my jaw tightening into stone.
"But he failed to realize that an unredacted financial audit carries a much heavier penalty than a board restructuring."
I touched the binding gauze over my temple, the physical sting of his strike completely vanishing beneath my focus.
